 Good, can't wait

I just finished installing the last of Texstar's Mdk RPMs and like 3.1 a lot. So far, my only major gripe is that the tabs in Konq aren't as good as the ones in Galeon. For instance, when I middle-click on a link (to open it in a background tab), the tab should appear immediately, not once the page starts to download. There's no way to tell if a tab will appear or not, which is a usability no-no. The lack of individual close buttons on the tabs is also annoying. But I have high hopes that the tabs will improve in 3.2.

Tabs shall appear immediately. In addition to that I'm missing a load status icon like in mozilla for each tab, so that I know when a page in a tab has finished loading without going to that tab.

BTW: There is close button for the tabs available. Just customize your toolbars and add it.

I'm looking forward to the transparent kicker! This should've been in 3.1 for sure.

 Transparent Kicker

IMO there shouldn't even be *any* transparency available until the X server provides real one.
Stuff is developed faster when many people want it a lot (like it happened with the transparencies provided by kde). By providing this false transparencies though, less users will feel the need and ask for real one.

you are totally right, the X server should support it before they use it, they shouldnt even think about making their own

 I hate OSX

What's with the new Conectiva Crystal icon set? It seems to be OSX-inspired and it's the default!! I think the dumbification of the computing world is in no small part due to Apple. We don't owe them anything -- especially to copy their idiotic icon look.

Plus, these icons are HARD on the EYES! They lack crispness and every icon looks like every other icon. YUCK!

Basically, I think the Conectiva Crystal icon set sucks because at anything below 32x32 all the icons tend to look EXACTLY the same and be completely indistinguishable. Plus they are hard on the eyes. Did I mention they suck and are hard on the eyes??

Please revert back to making kdeclassic the default icon set.

You're backwards about this whole issue. Quite the contrary, Apple has taught the industry that computers don't have to maintain a boring look and feel - by putting a little work into devloping style you can improve the user experience vastly. Look at how quickly XP changed their appearance after Apple started pushing image.

The Crystal icon set does this very effectively. KDE is proving Open Source OS's the professional graphical environment that will vastly help their acceptance on the desktop. Try convincing someone how "modern" an OS like Linux or FreeBSD is using fvvm or IceMaker - they look like Windows 3.1.

I don't understand why people have a problem with Crystal resembling OSX. So what? What does that detract from KDE? Using other people's good ideas and building upon them is at the heart of society.

KDE's decision to use Crystal as the default set is a testament to the maturity of the project.

KControl -> Appearance and Themes -> Icons. Whats the problem?

If you don't like *any* of the icon sets, I hear there's this website called kde-look.org that may have a few more :p

If you hate all existing icons, may I suggest you fire up Gimp/Karbon/Sodipodi and show us what you got?

 Konqueror Problem

by kbeaumont on: Feb 6 2003

I installed 3.1 but have a problem with Konqueror in filemangement profile. It spawns 2-3 additional artsd processes which even though arts is already running. If you hold the mouse above an audio file it freezes konqueror, it no longer responds. If you don't hold the mouse over a sound file and close konqueror. The process still remains if you kill arts the process dies. If you restart konqueror without killing the previous arts processes konqueror locks up. Every thing else works, noatun & kaboodle work fine. Does anybody know a way to fix this? I removed $HOME/.kde so it's not from my previous settings. This is really been annoying! It's too bad too because I think the rest of kde3.1 is just great! I'd like to know if anyone else has seen this.

Yes, I saw this, or something very similar. When I would browse to certain directories, Konqi would freeze, and so would any additional Konqi instances. Turning off file previews (Settings->Configure Konqueror, Previews) fixed it for me.

 PowerPC KDE

I got it working finally - I formatted my HD, and installed SuSE just so I could see KDE 3.1 :-)

SuSE seems to have compiled it with an old version of libpng - The alpha channels are converted to masks before drawing, so window corners, and especially icons look very ugly.

What's the most up-to-date PPC Linux Distro? Gentoo takes far too much time to compile everything on my 400 G3.

YDL doesn't even have 3.1 packages yet...

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
