 the packages

by supercatfrog on: May 26 2005

Score 50%

im using debian now and i miss gentoo's non-monolithic builds of everything kde, for example, kopete could be updated without having to reinstall kmail. it would be really great imho if kde was scaled back and only contained core libraries, and kmail, kopete, korg, etc were packaged seperately.

if the split builds were official it would be great and we wouldn't have problems like the msn protocol breaking and having to wait for kde 3.4.1 because kopete is coupled with kdenetwork, it would be better for those on slower connections too as less would have to be downloaded on an upgrade

fyi, gentoo devs only updated 3.3.2 ebuilds and for 3.4 they waited for 3.4.1 regarding the Kopete msn bug.

 Usability

It's still hard as hell to install new themes and stuff like that.

And please standardize an installer package (like autopackage) for KDE. KDE would leap over GNOME just with this last suggestion.

Unfortunately that isn't something KDE has any control over, only the distros can decide.

Also autopackage isn't really meant for the core libraries of a system, more so the apps (like the apps on KDE-Apps.org, but not the core kde libraries)

 speed

maybe it should be differentiated between (1) KDE startup speed, (2) application startup speed and (3) application running speed...

'cause I think its only the second one that most people are annoyed about

I am mostly anoyed by konqueror's startup speed, which is as slow as any program-sometimes I have to wait the icon to bounce like 10 times before the app pops up.

"btw can x protocol be replaced by d-bus?"

No. The X Protocol is designed for a completely different purpose than D-Bus. D-Bus is an IPC system (like DCOP). X11R6 is the way you communicate between the X clients (like konqueror), and the X servers (like Xorg), and can operate over things such as tcp/ip, as well as shared memory.

It would be far more likely for someone to create a way to have the X protocol over d-bus, though that would be slow and painful (for the developer and end user).

KDE is the greatest thing ever created.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
