SVG Wallpaper Challenge UPDATE

By theobroma
Published: Dec 16 2004

Announcing the KDE SVG Wallpaper Challenge!

You heard me right KDE 3.4 will support SVG wallpapers. That also means that 4 wallpapers from this challenge will be selected to be bundled with the newest release!

Wait there's more!

Corefunction.com is giving away a killer prize for the wallpaper that comes in 1st place!

KDE! So all entries must say KDE or have a gear on them.

* The majority of the artwork must be original.
In other words if you find a KDE logo you like and it is GPL'd then use it.
* SVG or SVGZ is the required format.
(Inkscape and Sodipodi are great programs to make these.)
* Rastor based images will not be accepted!
(Rastor based images are made with programs like The Gimp and Photoshop.)
* All wallpapers submitted should be 1024 pixels x 768 pixels.
Remember they will automaticly scale to all the other sizes.
* The wallpaper must at least be GPL'd but the KDE Artists modified LGPL or a less restrictive license may be a better fit for some artists.

Where do I submit my wallpaper?
At KDE-Look.org in the Other Wallpaper section. Please include the words "KDE SVG" in the name field of your submission.

What can I win?
The first place winner will be able to chose between a nVIDIA GeForce FX5700LE Video Card or a 120GB Hard Drive graciously provided by Corefunction.com. The second place winner will receive a T-shirt featuring their wallpaper provided by Revelinux Gear.

What happens next?
This wallpaper contest will close on Dec. 31st. A panel of judges will look at the top ten submissions and will choose 4 new SVG wallpapers to go into the next release of KDE. The final choice will be made by the judges, but the feedback of the kde-look community will be taken into account. So we encourage EVERYBODY to participate with your constructive comments and suggestions.

The four wallpapers will also be made into t-shirts that will be on sale at Revelinux Gear with all the proceeds going toward kde-look.org.

Who are the judges?
Aaron Seigo, Kenneth Wimer, Jonathan Riddell, Carsten Schlipf (our very own Yaba),
Wade Jolson, Thomas (the maker of the Baghira style) and Frans Englich

The last day to submitt your KDE SVG wallpaper is January 8th 2005

Have fun and be creative!
Due to your requests this challenge will be extended to January 8th 2005!
Your voice counts here at kde-look thank you for all for your feedback.

 SVG Support

Why you are starting a contest about SVG Wallpaper when the SVG isn't 100% supported in KDE 3.4 ??

Powered by Gentoo.

It's kinda like what came first the chicken or the egg? In other words we need svg wallpapers in order to perfect thier support in KDE. When it comes to software/features 100% is an awfully big number. Only because it can always be improved. Just a thought.

Our coders which art all around the world hallowed be thy names give us this day our daily update...

50% is an awfully small number when the spec is out their and they even give you the algorithms for filters.

I've even tried mailing the KSVG guys to see what help they need but didn't get a reply.

 problem with fonts

so see i right that the svg wallpaper in kde 3.4 are rendered with ksvgiconengine (and this is a small version of ksvg).

so there are some things that can displayed in ksvg but not in ksvgiconengine.

now i tested my background by a friend and it looks fine, up to one little problem. i use in my svg wallpaper normal text (versions number). somehow this text is not displayed?
i think, ksvgiconengine cant find the right font and so it uses no font, or something like that.

how can i correct my problem. is ther any changs to embed the font file in the svg file? one solution is to make a path from the text, but then the versionsnumber isn't editable any longer :(

(sorry for bad english, bablfish is your friend but it's not perfect ;) )

An easy way to correct this problem is, if you are using Inkscape, convert the text into a path -- that might work.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
