KPDF Icon Contest Prolonged

By fab
Published: Oct 2 2004

KPDF Icon Contest Prolonged

We are very proud and happy to see that so many KPDF icons where submitted at KDE-Look.org. A big thank you to all artists involved on KDE-Look.org!

We noticed that several icons were using the Adobe logo. Because we want to avoid trademark disputes with Adobe the jury decided to give the artists involved some extra time to check their submissions.

Basicly this is a new criteria added to the contest. Therefore we decided to prolong the contest for 2 weeks. That way every artist has enough time to work on possible modifications for their icons. The Icon Contest is also open for new submissions.

This means the KPDF Icon contest will now close on the 15th of October.

Your jury.

Just because Adobe did not sue Everaldo yet it does not mean that they never will do it.

It is clearly different using the logo in a mimetype than using it in an application.

Using in a mimetype just means "ey, look that is a pdf", that is not bad for adobe in any means.

Using it in an application seems to mean "ey look i am endorsed by adobe" so it is clearly bad for adobe as kpdf is in direct competition with Acrobat Reader.

 what about asking?

what about asking adobe, if they mind if someone uses their logo for PDF

if i were adobe, i would be really happy, if somebody uses my logo for non-windows htings for PDF's, so maybe they will also support us with informations, money or both, if they like the idea

i know that adobe is not one of the companies that likes opensouce, but asking does not hurt

what you want is impossible.
you want an icon for a kpdf, but you wont allow us use the pdf symbol. so what other things can we do? create an icon for a program for reading documents?

hmm ...

what the world needs is an "openPDF symbol" (for all apps that are doing something with PDF but are opensource)

by the way: do anybody know how to edit PDF's without using a closed-source editor (adobe acrobad, pdfedit ...) - thx in advance

good joke ;-)

however, the metadata of PDF's CAN be edited with khexedit, but the other things are in non-human-readable format... so my search goes on

... or does someone know the specifications of PDF in detail? maybe i can start some project like pdf2svg or something like this (text stays text! would be the most important feature, as i don't really like to edit vectorized text)

PDF files can certainly be edited with KWord ;)

kword can import texts from PDF-files, yes, but it yet do not keep the relative positions of things and also some formatings is lost

kword is great for extracting texts from pdf's but not yet usable for editing pdf's

thanx for the hint

Take a look to CENON, a Gnustep based app. I haven't use it by the moment. It's a little long time compilation, if you know about.

I don't know... That may be work.

If "some one is waiting to know if any icon form artwork contest is in the next KPDF release", please don't come here for an answer.

Do a Google search or some think like that, i'm just sitting, specting that anybody be respectuful with people involved in contest.

Offer a simple answer !!!

I didn't want to chime in but you would have figured someone would have mentioned something by now. I have yet to know who won the "kontact slpash" contest let alone this one. Is the kpdf jury hung too?

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
