The Future of KDE

The Future of KDE

By Yaba
Published: Aug 16 2005
The goal of the Appeal project is to combine art, usability and software development into the next step of user experience: A breathtaking desktop.

While most of the individual subprojects aim on KDE 4, some already will bring changes to KDE 3.5 like the new Oxygen iconset or the new context based search engine Tenor. But with projects like Coolness or Plasma the wait for KDE 4 will become a very long time. Until then you might shorten it by reading the KDE 3.5 reviews (part 1 and part 2) written by Jure Repinc.

You've just made my life miserable until KDE4 is released!! :-)

Thanks for the great preview. Any idea how KDE4 can be pulled from SVN and compiled?

Cheers.

I'm glad you like my preview. To compile from SVN just follow this tutorial: http://quality.kde.org/develop/cvsguide/index.php Oh and you will not see many new things in the trunk (KDE 4) as they are now mainly just preparing (porting) sources to make them compile with Qt 4. So many things don't even work now. After they port everything only then the real work of adding new features will start.

I hope "Oxygen" is not another way of saying "Oh I love Mac icons, I love em, I love em, I love em!" Cause that is getting boring already.

That's really great. Reminds me of the time I started to work with my father's Atari ST ;)

How exactly will Oxygen bring changes to KDE 3.5?

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
