KPilot Icons & Splash Contest

By cwoelz
Published: Jul 20 2004

Hello artists in the KDE community!

The KPilot developers is looking for a new splash screen for KPilot, and new sync icons.

Current KPilot icons are based on the "recycled" icon, and are not satisfactory. Palm uses a weird two-arrow thingy and/or a star for a sync icon now. We need new icons for:

  • HotSync (balanced speed / safety, main sync method)
  • FastSync
  • FullSync
  • List Only (only lists the data available on the device, no sync)

If you are looking for inspiration, Adriaan de Groot drew a couple of arrows that may serve as a base for your design. You can see the arrows below. They are very simple, but you can get the idea.

Click here to see the Adriaan's opposing arows icon.

Current recycled based sync icon look like this (these icons should be replaced):

Click here to see the current recycle based sync icon.

Criteria for the icons:

  • The recycle icon is bad; other arrows are better.
  • Resemblance to other open source apps sync icons (multisync / jpilot / gpilot) a plus.
  • Icons that scale well up and down are preferred.
  • License: The standard kde-pim license is the GPL with the Qt exception. But the KDE Artists modified LGPL or a less restrictive license may be a better fit for artwork. See http://artist.kde.org/new/license.html

The requirements for the Splash Screen are:

  • It should have no text other than "KPilot", to minimize translation work.
  • No penguins or symbols of a specific OS: KPilot runs in different OS's.
  • License: The standard kde-pim license is the GPL with the Qt exception. But the KDE Artists modified LGPL or a less restrictive license may be a better fit for artwork. See http://artist.kde.org/new/license.html

Click here to see the current (outdated) splash.

The KPilot developers will choose the best splash screen and icons that fit the criteria (the icons and splash will be judged separately). The last day for applying is 31 July. it would be nice to ship KDE 3.3 with the new sync icons and splash.

Please include the word "KPilot" in your description of the icons or splash, so we can easily find it in kde-look.org. May the best screenshot and icons win!

Cheers,

KPilot developers

The answer is yes, you can submit you icon for KPilot, but please submit the sync icons and the KPilot icon separately, as we can easily put them together later.

The sync icons should reflect the sync operation only, and should scale down well. Therefore, the icons for the sync operations should not include the KPilot icon.
(Sorry for the confusion: the icon displayed in the example above http://tinyurl.com/6tp5v is just KPilot icon + sync icon below. ) We were looking in this contest for the sync icon.

However, if you want to submit your icon for KPilot, you are more than welcome to do so. If accepted, we would use your icon as a background for all icons in the sidebar, just like we use the current one, i.e. all the viewers and the file installer, not only the HotSync viewer.

Cheers!

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
