KPDF Icon Contest

By fab
Published: Sep 11 2004

Artists of the world, ... unite !!

You want fame and fortune, well here is at least your chance for fame. Design a cool icon for KDE!!

Who's the patient?

We are looking for a new icon for KPDF, the PDF reader in KDE. The current KPDF icon has nothing to do with a PDF viewer so we would like to have it changed for the next KDE release.

What are the criteria for the icons?

  • all designs need to be original artwork
  • the icon should be in Crystal style
  • SVG or SVGZ is the required format for submissions
  • provide source files of your design
  • the design must have a free-to-use license (eg GPL). KPDF uses the GPL license with the Qt exception but the KDE Artists modified LGPL or a less restrictive license may be a better fit for artwork.
  • the icon should explain the app is useful for viewing PDF

How do I submit my artwork?

When uploading your artwork you should use the type Artwork Contest. That way it will show up on the section Artwork Contest on KDE-Look.org. Please include the word 'KPDF' in the description field or name field of your submission

What happens next?

The icon contest will close on 1st October, some days before the next KDE release. A jury will look at all submissions and will choose the new KPDF icon. The chosen icon will be included in the upcoming KDE 3.3.1 release.

Be aware that the icon contest will close on 1st October!

Stimulate your artistic minds and amaze us with cool icons!

Your jury.

  • Albert Astals Cid (KPDF developer)
  • Enrico Ros (KPDF developer)
  • Frank Karlitschek (KDE artist)
  • Kenneth Wimer (KDE artist)

I'd be happy to know what the jury now thinks of the current submissions, maybe others might join the discussion? or dont 'we' have a voice in any way?

You can always rate the icon. I don't think the jury is going to choose the lowest rated icon.

Do the SVG files count as the "source" files?

I'm assuming a clone of the original work file through Inkscape is not acceptable.

For Linux to catch up to Microsoft, Linux Development would have to stop all together and regress. - Donald Ade'

Yes SVG count as source files, so you can base your work on a SVG file only if that SVG file is already GPL/LGPL and thus you have the rights to modify it.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
