KDE SVG Wallpaper winners!

By theobroma
Published: Jan 22 2005

The KDE SVG Wallpaper contest has been finalized. It was not an easy task as there was so much incredible artwork. The judges sorted through all 86 entries and choose the top four and the winners are...

Tied for third place is 'Geared Globe' by Tschaeck and 'Andes Venezolanos" by Rendergraf. Incredible job both of you! Your SVG wallpapers will be included in KDE 3.4. You guys have truly made a difference in KDE.

The second place winner is Gear Flowers by Tetromino . Congratulations not only will your artwork be included KDE 3.4 but you have also won a T-shirt featuring your wallpaper provided by Revelinux Gear.

And the 1st place winner of the KDE SVG Wallpaper Contest is...

We are Gear by gg3po. Your wallpaper will also be included in this upcoming release of KDE and as the 1st winner you get to choose between a nVIDIA GeForce FX5700LE Video Card or a 120GB Hard Drive provided by Corefunction.com.

To all the rest of you who entered this contest: THANK YOU!!
I can't believe the amazing artwork that was made in such a short period of time. It would be great to see some of this artwork uploaded as .jpeg or .png wallpapers and splash screens.

Not only will the winning wallpapers be included in KDE 3.4 they will also will be made into t-shirts on sale at Revelinux Gear with all the proceeds going to support kde-look.org and kde-apps.org.

Thank you to all the judges and a special thanks going out to Yaba who coordinated the judging.

This 4 wallpapers are really good art, but i must admit i would choose between 3rd and 4th place for a winner, just for the sake of simplicity.
I find both 1st and 2nd place too distractive for a wallpaper, judges seem to value the quantity of elements though ...

Wow! I just barely checked kde-look today and saw the news. After my entry started dropping down in the rankings awhile ago, I thought I didn't stand a chance, anymore. I was actually quite surprised! I really want to thank everyone over there at kde-look for this cool contest. I think no matter who the official 'winners' of the contest are, the *real* winners are the whole community. When I look over all the entries, we really got a lot of cool wallpapers out of this! Thanks again! You guys all rock!

oops! I meant to make this a top-level post, instead of a response to the above comment. In all my excitement, I guess I goofed. Sorry.

For me the best picture is "Andes Venezolanos". The "We are"-1st place picture is imho too nervous and the gear flowers - uhm... too... especially that hummingbird does not match the rest at all....

 sour grapes

At least two of the four selected works are not Scalable, including winner! They won't show properly at 800x600 and leave blanks at 1200x960 or any other rez. They are valid artwork, but no difference with any png 24 then. Thought it was an SVG competition!!!

Have you contacted the creators of the SVG's about this?

No. Purpose of post was to inform everyone, including judges, and no one in particular. There might be more works in that situation, who knows.

For those interested in discovering SVG a good place is http://www.svgx.org All links there.

Cheers.

I guess I'd just like to ask for a little clarification to see If I can help fix the problem you're experiencing. Would it be possible to post in the screenshots section the problem you've been having at 800x600 and/or 1200x960? If I could see it, maybe I could figure out what is causing it, and put out a fixed version. I have to admit I'm a bit confused as to why you would be having scaling problems, since SVG is supposed to do this quite well.

svg doesn't scale automatically. You need to set the viewBox attribute. Illustrator, Inkscape, etc. have an svg exporting facility, but then the file needs to be edited for some things to happen. Looking at the file I can see the boundingBox of your art is bigger than 1024x768, which is a good idea for getting extra art when viewing under a non 4/3 rez instead of blanks. But then I can also see you made the green rect with the purpose of setting the x origin there. Problem is, those programs above don't know your intention, so they set the preserveAspectRatio attribute to "xMidYMid meet" (default), that has the effect of centering, where instead you meant the gear to be slightly cut, say at the rect level, am I right?
Other explanations would be too long here. I fixed the file instead. Would you like me to send it to you? Where?

Your work is really nice and poetic.

If you could send it to gg3po@hotmail.com, I'd much appreciate it. I'll take a look at it.

Ok if you are having problems with your SVG wallpaper resizing open it in inkscape or sodipodi then resize the image. to width 100% height 100%. There problem solved. The short explanation behind this is if you save a .svg with specific height and width limitations it will hold fast to those limitations. So another great feature of .svg is the ability to save the image in a way so as to expand as needed and keeping the crisp quality. Cool huh!

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
