Big thanks and my little ideas

by takanowaka on: Apr 2 2009

Score 50%

first of all I would like to thank you for your effort of doing Stasks ;)

and I would like to ask - would it be possible to:

1. merge stasks with quicklaunch and system tray functionality?
2. make preview of task active (accessible through some kind of plugins that would be written for this)
and thumbnail (inactive) preview would be only rendered as fallback function when no plugin was found

following screenshot will make bigger sence
http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/5792/stasks.png

P.S.: hope this wasn't posted somewhere already :p

1. Both ideas were proposed already. You can try to find these messages and read why integration of systray would be hard. And by the way, for what integrate them? This would mean less flexibility and code duplication only.

2. This was also discussed earlier. Code is already written (for Fancy Tasks), it only needs porting, when Marcin will have time and if want to do it at all.

Nice mockup. :-)

add point 1. the idea behind this is: why should I have 3 icons to work with for the same prog? For me there's no difference when I want to launch it or max/min/preview the window or check the status or whatever is in sys tray. Why should there be 3 different places where I should look when it's possible to have it on 1?

thanks as you can see it was just late night work when I couldn't sleep.. didn't think they are as good ;)

to say it simple I want just 1 icon instead of 3 for all functions (quicklaunch/minimize/system tray)

Thanks.. I wish I could do more than this but I'm no coder :( so I'll be waiting patiently for new releases and changes ;)

P.S.: if you want to adopt the sys tray thing I was reading there would be some changes of sys tray protocol in KDE 4.3 http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/Plasma/NewSystemTray

This spec must be adopted by third party applications, so currently relying only on it doesn't make so much sense, we need to wait...
And I'm not sure if it will be possible to find which systray icon belongs to task. And what to do when we click on icon that contains both systray entry and task? What if systray entry uses activation signal?
There are many problems with this idea. And systray wasn't invented for merging it again with tasks, I think. ;-)
It is nor easy at all to merge tasks with launchers because of current possibilities of libtaskmanager and after mergining of systray icons there would be much more problems with for example sorting, placing new icons in right place etc.

 Black border on KDE 4.3trunk

On 4.3 trunk there's a big ugly black border around the window thumbnails when you hover over them. Any chance this can be fixed?

This version of KDE is unstable and there is no sense in preparing any plasmoid for it before it will reach release candidate state.

 Stasks Expanding Tasks

by joshjtl on: Apr 2 2009

Score 50%

Hi, I really like Stasks especially for its expanding tasks because it gives me more room in the task manager. Although I find it useful I have a hard time when moving quickly getting to a task because of the expanding. Is there anything you can do to make that process better? Perhaps allowing decreasing speed of expanding animation further than 150, or perhaps even click to expand might be an idea.
Thanks!
Josh

 Icons' size

Some applications doesn't have big icons (64px) and it looks like here:
http://f.imagehost.org/0918/00_51_21.png
Is it possible to zoom such icons?

Yes, it is.
But sometimes they could look blurry, but I think that it would be better than very small icons and big empty space.

 2 suggestions/requests/whatevr

1)
Maybe it could be fine, if you would be able to "center" the tasks. So that you have your tasks in the middle of the taskbar, clearly separated from the other stuff (was just an idea, can be ignored ;-)

2)
If you plan to merge application launcher and taskbar, there should be an option to start another process of already launched applications.
(E.g. if you have a quicklaunch for Dolphin, it could be senceful to be able to start another instance of Dolphin through the launcher and not only have access to the running instance of it.
Maybe you can manage this through a little button in the stasks-mouseover-windows-preview [I thought about a little "+" at the right side of the previews or sth. like this])

3)
Sometimes it does not group correctly - is it maybe possible to group applications by application class and not by application name?

Hope I could help you. Great work! Regards

2. It's possible to add menu entry in task context menu (like in Fancy Tasks) or maybe use double clicking on entry.

3. This is bug in libtaskmanager (so then with all applets that uses it, all task managers) which handles grouping and sorting.
Someone should finally create bug report for it so people could vote for it and someone maybe will fix that.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
