Description:

Plasmoid providing fancy visualization of tasks, launchers and jobs for those who need full power of task manager and fresh look.
Developed and tested on KDE 4.8 with Qt 4.8 (Kubuntu 12.04).

Some screen casts:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5i2S1xCKPk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wj4W6cqycl8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfqtnncLNcQ

Milestone 1.1 (current) will be last one using libtaskamanager and hopefully will be soon replaced by currently developed data engine based version (which should lower requirements back to KDE 4.6 or maybe earlier, depending on which one shipped first functional version of tasks data engine).

Milestone 2.0 will bring new dock management library which will allow for more advanced features. There will be also new, QML based, applet interface (might be available earlier, depends on progress on library).

Note that included panel was made only for test and could make various problems, use it on your own risk (I'll focus on it later).

This applet uses standard libtaskmanager like other task managers in KDE, so before you report bug check if it also happens in other applets (for example default Tasks applet).

Tips:
- to make applet more usable you can put it on panel with enabled option "Windows can cover" or similar;
- you can use theme with panel background similar to that of dock (for example Sabre Tiger) or modify current one using Desktop Theme Details;
- you can add launchers to applet by drag and drop of URLs and desktop files when Plasma is unlocked or using configuration dialog;
- to show only launchers you need to remove tasks area item from arrangement;
- to show application jobs you need to add jobs area.

Hidden options:
You can set them in applets configuration file (usually located at ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc), in group containing line plugin=fancytasks or plugin=fancypanel;
- initialZoomLevel - initial zoom level for zoom move animations (value ranging from 0 to 1, default: 0.7);
- paintBackground - decides if background should be painted or not (true or false, default: true);
- paintReflections - decides if icon reflection should be painted or not, note that it won't change icon size because of space allocation for drawing task indicators (true or false, default: true).

Features:
- manages your tasks, launchers and application jobs;
- tasks filtering, grouping (including manual) and sorting;
- keyboard navigation (Tab and Shift+Tab);
- launcher to task transition with custom connecting rules (icons of launchers with running tasks are hidden if sorting other than manual is enabled);
- tool tips with live preview of windows when KWin Taskbar Thumbnail effect is enabled;
- highlighting windows when hovering cursor over task or window preview when KWin Highlight Window effect is enabled;
- dropping files on launchers runs command with parameters or gives option to move, copy or link them (if target is directory);
- visual drop indicator that helps in manual tasks sorting and rearranging launchers;
- possibility to browse directories of directory launchers using context menu;
- possibility to add application menus;
- menu with list of all icons shown after activating keyboard shortcut;
- configurable animations (zoom, jump, bounce, highlight, etc.) and appearance (optional thumbnails and text label);
- fully animated icons (including animations of starting applications, tasks needing attention and application jobs progress).

If you have found bugs or have suggestions you can contact me via email, message or using comments, before you will vote bad.
And remember that not everybody has enough time for fast replying. ;-)

Don't be silly, don't vote bad just for fun!

Changelog:

1.1.2 (10.06.2012):
- increased task light size a bit;
- fixed label position for zoom animation;
- avoid hijacking of icons with launcher connected to task group (if grouping by program);
- clear thumbnail when launcher looses connected task.

1.1.1 (01.06.2012):
- reuse launcher icons by tasks also when using manual sorting;
- let startups connect to launcher icons (when there is no sorting or it set to manual);
- do not lose connection with launcher when group is created (if grouping by program);
- enable Apply button when configuration values are changed;
- do not propose to drop icon in place which equals its current index;
- enable Add / Remove action buttons;
- many other fixes and changes.

Did you run kbuildsycoca after installing?
If this doesn't help then there might be a bug in package or something got messed on your system.

This is totally weird.
You are compiling newest version or the older one (1.0)?
Can you attach these errors somewhere (some online text pasting service would be best)?
You may have unsatisfied dependencies or Arch requires some changes and there is patch included, I've no idea now.

Icon maybe is not beautiful but is best from those available...
I'm still interested in that compilation error, unless it was caused by some missing dependencies.

I experimented Fancy Tasks, but with time to using that, i verify that is very buggy !

Now im using Cairo Dock with OpenGl, it has a lot of very cool efects, many themes, its easy, and rarely Crashes ! :-)

Yes, yes, advertising other apps is not very good idea...
Also you should list bugs (and not bugs of libtaskmanager) when making such as statements.
Moreover, as version number indicates current version is not stable and included panel is completely experimental still.

 Can I add widgets to Fancy Tasks?

There are all sorts of reasons why I love Fancy tasks, but I need to be able to have some widgets on my panel and I can't figure out how to add them. Is this even possible or am I just missing something?

I'm an old AWN user back in my Ubuntu days so Fancy Tasks seems like a dream come true if I can get the widget issue resolved.

Such as version of containment waits for polishing for many months already (has some sizing issues etc., but basically worked when I've checked it last time).
Hopefully I'll have some time to touch this in next days.

But still best way to have custom panel background is to modify Plasma theme, if you have only one panel then it is enough to set custom file for background panel in theme details using System Settings (in case of more panels this might have ugly side effects, it will be applied to all of them, this is annoying limitation).

 Fails to build with KDE SC 4.8

Some classes were removed from libtaskmanager during KDE SC 4.8 development, so this package no longer builds. It will have to be ported to something new (ktorrent switched to some DBus based method).

 Re: Fails to build with KDE SC 4.8

 by Emdek on: Dec 31 2011

Score 50%

Possible, that library is very unstable...
I'm going to switch to using data engine (but I'm not sure in which version it was introduced...) or finish own implementation. In both cases missing part is sorting and grouping.
Having own library means lower requirements (but I'm not sure if there is sense in supporting KDE versions older that 4.5) but in case of using data engine I get reliable maintenance for free (also support for platforms other than Linux / BSD) and features like activities hooked in...

There is still some time before 4.8 release and I'm currently compiling it (it was way easier and more straightforward in SVN times ;-)).

There is now mostly working version for 4.8, mostly and not fully due to bigger than usual changes in libtaskmanager.
Data engine version is currently work in progress, hopefully I will be able to replace this hackish version by proper solution in next two weeks...

Hy there.First of all. Thank you. The app is amazing. I had an old version and I will (re)install this new one. The application is amazing.

Probably this request bothers you, but please, since you made packages for the most popular distros, might you be able to make a .deb one? It will save a lot of work regarding compilation and dependencies problems...

Thanks in advance for your replay and of course for your work.

In fact those are only links to packages done by others (not always up to date also) but I'm thinking about creating packages for my applets (as even if they are included then they are horribly outdated).
But for now there is no ETA for that and I've never tried creating them. Additionally, those would be only for KDE 4.8 only, which is only available through special backports repository AFAIK (or maybe this was already pushed as official update?).

Try running plasmoidviewer fancytasks, if it shows up there then it is installed properly, however it could be available under different name (desktop file contains some translations, which usually are very different from English name...).

You mean title or translation file?
For title just edit applet/plasma-applet-fancytasks.desktop (change / remove entries with [es]).
To remove translation file you will need to remove (as root, so do it carefully) /usr/share/locale/es/LC_MESSAGES/plasma_applet_fancytasks.mo (or similar path, could be different).
You will need to remove that file each time after installing (or remove applet/locale/es.mo before installing - but you need to remove current one anyway).

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
 It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
 Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
 Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
 Gnome 3 default shell is much better
 I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
 None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
