Description:

For >=KDE-4.2

This is another weather plasmoid.
It aims to be highly customizable, but a little harder to setup than other weather plasmoids.
Nearly any weather forecast provider can be used, as long as the data is provided as html files (no flash).
The information how to extract the information from these html files is stored inside xml files.
Commands like grep, head, tail, sed, awk, ... will do this job.

For now, xml files for the weather providers

br.weather.com (°C) (city identifier example: BRXX0043)
de.weather.com (°C) (city identifier example: 80331 or UKXX0085)
espanol.weather.com (°C) (city identifier example: Ciudad-de-Mexico-MXDF0132)
fr.weather.com (°C) (city identifier example: Paris-FRXX0076)
in.weather.com (°C) (city identifier example: New-Delhi-INXX0096)
uk.weather.com (°C) (city identifier example: London-UKXX0085)
wetter.com (°C) (city identifier example: DE0006515)
myforecast.com (°C) (city identifier example: 12844)
myforecast.com (°F) (city identifier example: 12844)
www.weather.com.cn (°C) (city identifier example: 101010100)
accuweather.com US (°C) (city identifier example: 85001)
accuweather.com US (°F) (city identifier example: 85001)
accuweather.com world (°C) (city identifier example: 305448)
accuweather.com world (°F) (city identifier example: 305448)
ilmeteo.it (°C) (city identifier example: Roma)
pogodynka.pl (°C) (city identifier example: Warszawa)
www.gismeteo.com (°C) (city identifier example: 4944)
openweathermap.org (°C) (city identifier example: id=2643743 or q=London,UK)
openweathermap.org (°F) (city identifier example: id=5506956 or q=Las Vegas,US)

are included, but feel free to write your own ones.
Please note, that some of the xml files might not work properly for all locations.
If they don't, try to update your definition files: either install latest cwp release or/and download latest xml definition
file package from
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/show.php?content=98925
and unpack the xml files into ~/.kde4/share/apps/cwp (the cwp application folder inside your kde directory).

To access extended information about current weather condition, left-click inside the current weather description!
The time, when the provider updated his weather information is shown italic when clicked on update time.

CWP saves current weather data on exit inside $HOME/./share/apps/cwp folder, so after crashes you might want to clean up
this directory, or completely remove it.

Parts of the source code are taken from weather plasmoid 0.4, KDE 4.2, qimageblitz, yaWP.
Thanks to the developers!

If you experience any bugs, please report them here.
Running
plasmoidviewer plasma_applet_cwp
or starting plasma from the console
might give you some debug information.

 several cities in one widget?

by janet on: Mar 26 2010

Score 50%

It's so cool, I still wish it would be integrated and default in KDE...

What I'd really like to see in cwp would be a way to show weather information for several cities without the need to add a second cwp-plasmoid to the desktop. I could imagine two ways: either with a drop-down list to choose a different favorite city on-the-fly - or to have tabs to quickly switch between different forecasts. What do you think?

Want Debian Sid with spices? Get sidux at sidux.com - it simply works :)

This is already implemented:
In the config window setup your first city including satellite images, and then click "New" button next to "preferred location" (below city setup). Enter a name for this preferred location.
Repeat for each city you want to have in this list.
Right-clicking on the cwp plasmoid shows these preferred locations, and you can quickly switch between these cities.

 Few Things of Note

Nice plasmoid.

I do have some comments on the latest.

There's no .deb file for Ubuntu, etc. That would be nice. And there's no 3rd party site that provides one.

Linux today is all about ease of use. It is not about teaching anyone anything. The whole idea of asking someone to compile is akin to asking someone to build their own refrigerator. You just don't do it. This changed a simple double click and a 30 second wait into a day trying to work out why the make and compile process failed right and left.

Ultimately I worked it out, but with lots of searching on the web and just having some faith that I interpreted correctly what people were saying. This whole compile your source option is what holds back Linux. Extreme effort should be made to ensure NO one has to do this, and yes, for free like CWP.

When I went to compile from source the issue was that I found no information on how to compile nor what was necessary to have installed. I tried a few things and installed what seemed necessary and finally it compiled. I did a sudo make install, yet the product never showed up as a choice of plasma widgets. I installed the version from the repository (which had issues with accuweather and weather.com) then did a sudo make install. I then had to manually copy the .desktop file and the plasma-cwp.so to the proper locations. After that the program came up with a list of providers from the older 0.9.12 version. I couldn't find how to change it. I still had the problem with accuweather and weather.com.

Finally I read the 1.0.0 release info and it stated that the .xml files found in the .cwp folder overrides those found in the install folder. After putting those into that folder the problem was solved. Except...

Except the issue was with the fact that with accuweather for my zipcode though the 7 day compact layout icons were present the textual data was missing, which made it look cheap. I changed that to weather.com. That worked.

I'm not trying to be over critical but really, to take a 30 second install and make it over a day's problem solving trek was not a positive thing and it should never happen. You might consider putting up the appropriate installer files as pre-compiled binaries.

Thanks for your comments.
I see that information inside README file might not help you, if compilation fails (although exactly those steps work fine on the systems I tried).
I guess a comment as "if you don't like it, don't use it" isn't useful either.
However, the problem is your distribution, not the application developer.
As distributions change within months, you'd effectively need to install about 10 Linux systems, and update your project every few weeks.
Sorry, no time left for that work.
Probably Opensuse build service might help, would provide suse, mandriva, fedora rpms and debian and ubuntu deb files.
Which does cover some of the larger distributions.
I'll see what I can do.
I see that you don't want to compile anything.
Good news: for cpw >= 1.0.0 you might not need to upgrade to each new release. XML files can be updated seperately, just by copying them to /home/<user>/.cwp folder.
I'm planning to release 1.0.x with only updates to xml files, and release xml files seperately.

It tries to fetch from :

Thanks for your comment.
That's not a bug, it's a feature.
It's how cwp works: go to the weather provider page, and extract from the address line of your browser the part that identifies your city.
It's not necessarily a city name, might also be some number, ...
There is no way for cwp to translate your city name into weather provider's city identifier, sorry.
But as it works, I guess it's fine.

You misunderstood me :)
In pogodynka.pl plugin im suposed to enter city _name_. And this city name should be added in url then requesting data.
It works good with "Warszawa" or "Katowice" or any other city without polish national letters in name.
But when im entering "Kraków", "Łódź", "Poznań" it dont work. Why ? Propably it encodes city name to the url in UTF-8 encoding (two bytes for one polish char), and it should as ISO-8859-2 or CP1250 (one byte for one polish char). That is bug in my opinion.

OK, now I see your point.
You think, cwp should translate "city identifier" to html url encoding (all special character into html encoding, for example "ó" to "%F3").

I'm not sure if that is possible:
If everything you enter inside "city identifier" box to html url encoding, you won't be able to enter anything like "gid=3117735&la=4" as required for freemeteo.com, because it would be translated to "gid%3D3117735%26la%3Dla%264".

So I still think this is not a bug, but a feature. You need to enter the city identifier as it appears inside the url of your browser. And for "Kraków" it's "Krak%F3w" that appears at the end of the url.
Changing cwp behaviour of city identifiers will break other weather providers.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
