Description:

Yet Another Weather Plasmoid.
There is nothing wrong with the ones that exist, I just wanted something more colorful.

This plasmoid belongs to other people, it would not be where it is without their help. See the README.

Please help with additional themes and translations, thanks.

For the latest unstable version:
svn co https://yawp.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/yawp/trunk yawp

INSTALL NOTES
tar -jxf yawp*
cd yawp*
./install.sh

Changelog:

0.4.5 (23 Mar 2013)
* Bugfix: Desktop mode is not reusing applet size from last session.
* Bugfix: yaWP crashes in systemtray with KDE 4.10

0.4.4 (17 Mar 2012)
* New desktop painter has been added. Yawp can be configured to use the traditional or the new one for desktop and/or for popup window.
* Panel painter has been rewritten
* Initialization stuff of yawp has been moved to init method, because yawp crashes on KDE 4.8 due to the usage of not initialized components.
* Usage of KMessageBox has been replaced within DlgAddCity, otherwise yawp crashes on KDE 4.8.5 (some earlier versions might be included as well).
Using KMessageBoxes within KConfigDialog (yawp settings dialog) still works as expected.
* Google ION has been removed, because Google does not support this service any longer.
* Updating and fixing translations
* Bugfix: yaWP did not update weatherdata periodically after hibernation - it is working now

0.4.3 (17 Apr 2012)
* Show current RealFeel temperature under current temperature (thanks to Alain Soucy)
* Non-modale city search dialog
* Implementing public slot configChanged() to behave like a standard plasmoid - yaWP can be configured from external programs (e.g.: javascript)
* changing internal handling of extender (KDE 4.8 only) - when plasmoid will be used in desktop mode extender is not used and will be destroyed, when plasmoid is moved to panel a new extender will be created
* little tweaks to horizontal panel layout, adding more spaces between icons
* Ukrainian translation updated (Thanks to Yuri Chornoivan)

0.4.2 (04 Jan 2012)
* Adapting yaWP to KDE 4.8
* ION AccuWeather is showing closer maps for cities of the United States.
* Workaround crashes in city search dialog in KDE >= 4.7.4
* Frech and Slovak trasnlation updated
* Fixes in Wunderground ION
* Fix double translation for Short day names

0.4.1 (03 Dec 2011)
* Add ability to open forecast in browser (if URL is provided by ION)
* ION wunderground is returning a sorted list of cities (airport stations are listed on top of list,
because in general terms this station type contains more weather information than the personal weather station type).
* ION Wunderground is supporting satellite maps as well
* ION accuweather is not using a config-file for satellite image mapping any longer (feature has been added in version 0.4.0
but I think this was a stupid idea). Satellite images will be hard coded mapped to location in ION.
* Translations updated (CZ, FR)
* Several little bug fixes - including geometry issues

0.4.0 (13 Nov 2011)
* Bugfix: text in animation area jumps up or down at start and at the end of animation
* applets painting methods has been extracted and rewritten, for re-use and hopefully the new painting methods are well structured
* yaWP supports externder items (in panel mode only) - extender item interacts with user like desktop mode.
In panel mode:
When user clicks on the applet (but not on the weather forecast icons) the extender pops up.
The behavior of the applet for clicking on the weather forecast icons can be configured in the config dialog on page "Panel"
option "Use interactive weather icons". When this option is checked the weather icon will toggle between day and night
(in case we have weather information for day and night) otherwise the extender will appear.
* Removes old files from cache directory $HOME/.cache/yawp on a regular base.
* The install script install.sh uses more CPU cores if available. Could be override by -j script option.
* Turkish translation (thanks to Hasan Kiran)
* Czech, Slovak and French translation updated
* Changing unit system in config dialog will force auto-update.
* AccuWeather will use a config file for satellite mapping.

0.3.6 (12 Dec 2010)
* Traverse through all locations periodically (optional)
* Page 'Settings' from config-dialog has been redesigned to gain more space
* Fixing update bug in Wunderground Ion.
* Algorithm that is doing the text layout for the details area has been simplified
* Fix API breakage in 4.5.2/4.6

0.3.5 (8 Oct 2010)
* Fix compilation error on KDE 4.5.2
* Patching ions to work with new weather-data-engine, thanks to Raymond Wooninck
* Fixing legal issues (The source code of the standard ions used as the base)
* Ion is checking state of pressure, instead of just coping the data
* Fix issues with sunrise/sunset
* Prefer millimeters of mecrcury to torr on KDE 4.5
* Fix KDE version check - consistently use KDE_IS_VERSION

0.3.4 (7 Jul 2010)
* Fix torr description.
* Fix problems with some ions when yawp runs under ru locale
* Fix compilation error on PCBSD (thanks vvheritagevv) for patch.

* Showing observation time (the time when weather-service-provider has been updated the weather data) on details page, when specific ion supports this feature.
Ion Google, AccuWeather and Wunderground returning observation time, as well.
* Timestamps for sunrise and sunset will be returned in the new timestamp format (when compiling with kde 4.3 and above - timestamps in the standard ions had been changed)

No data for some cities (v032)

by mmtsales on: Jul 13 2010

Score 50%

I love this plasmoid, thanks for it.
I have this weird problem of no data being displayed for some cities in version 0.3.2, while it works correctly in the older version 0.2.3. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?
For example, "Buenos Aires, Argentina (Distrito Federal)" (in english: Buenos Aires, Argentina (Federal District)) do not show any data in 0.3.2, but it works correctly in 0.2.3
Also, "San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina (Rio Negro)" shows no data, while "Bariloche, Argentina (Rio Negro)" is displayed correctly. Both refers to the same city.
All of this is using AccuWeather as the data source.
Sorry if this is not the place for support. If it is not, please tell me where should I post this message or fill a bug report.

Thanks very much.

Hi,
could you try the latest version 0.3.3? Your issue looks similar to issue we have with "Russian" locale and should be fixed now.

I tested r421 with accuweather.
If I understand correctly now weather icon changes from day to night when there is time for next update instead of time of sunset. This fixes missing weather conditions issue.

Today I noticed other issue with pressure on accuweather - it was something like -25345 torr (the same was on site). At this time pressure returned by accuweather was unavailable:

<pressure state="Unavailable">-999</pressure>

May be yaWP should check returned data and not display it if it is wrong?

The pressure bug should/will be fixed.
I do not understand you with "missing weather conditions issue". Can you describe it in detail.

 Issue when in systemtray

 by google01103 on: Jul 29 2010

Score 50%

The yaWP widget available through the systemtray settings will not change
location (show city) if accessed while hidden. They icon (not the popup) shows
activity if the city is changed but the displayed popup does not show the newly
selected city.

If the waWP is not hidden it changes city correctly

Tried filing a bug and got this reply
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=246143
"sounds like a bug in yawp, which is a third-party add-on. please report to the
author of yawp. if it turns out to actually be an upstream (e.g. plasma) bug,
then re-open this report and include a comment about what the resolution with
the yawp developer was. thanks :)"

Sorry, but i do not understand you. How do you get the popup-menu of yawp, when yawp is hidden? Can you be a little bit more specific? Probably, it is a good idea to describe step by step what you did to cause your problem. Can you re-enact this problem?

in systemtray settings -> display -> extray items I enable the systemtray version of yaWP

in systemtray settings -> entries I set yaWP to hidden

to see yaWP I click the "show hidden icons" icon in the systemtray. This pops up a window of hidden sustemtray icons. I then right click the yaWP icon to change settings or hover the icon to display the weather.

But if I change location using "show city" the location does not change if yaWP is set up this way, though it does if it is visible in the systemtray.

And you it is reproducible

thanks,

Well, I'm using kde 4.4 (debian) and it works. In your footer is written kde 4.6, is that the version of kde you are using?

According to www.kde.org this version has not been official released. Therefore i would call this version still alpha. So, it might be possible that the system-tray is not handling the plasmoids the right way by passing all events to them. Maybe anybody else can check it and apply a patch as possible, since i do not have kde 4.6 to test it.

 Different Maps

by Xanadu on: Aug 15 2010

Score 50%

Hey!

I very much like this weather applet, however, the only thing that's keeping me using CWP is it offers a ton of different weather map choices. The only map for the USA is one giant satellite view. I live on the eastern seaboard and prefer to see a Doppler view of the region. On a tiny little cloud view of the entire USA, I can't see how far away rain is without going to a website to see it. With CWP, it shows me/us right there.

I hate to talk "bad" about this weather plasmoid since I like the lay out better. It's compact and show (almost) everything I want to see in just a couple clicks.

 Re: Different Maps

I installed and played with cwp. I saw the combobox to select the satellite map. The values for this combobox are obviously from xml-file cwp-1.2.0/data/satellite_images.xml (in source directory). The most listed maps (in this file) have been provided from weather.com. In cwp the user can choose accuweather as weather provider (for all values) and choose a satellite map from weather.com. This seems a little bit odd to me.

The applet CWP is downloading the weather files and extracting the values with bash commands like grep, tail, ... This way the applet is very flexible, but needs a lot more resource to parse the xml files. However YAWP is using a different architecture to get the weather information. Yawp is using the weather data-engine from KDE, which is loading all plugins of all supported providers.
When YAWP is requesting the weather information of a city from this data-engine, it will receive a container with all information
(asynchronous).
I would like to stay this way and receive all weather information from the IONs instead of starting download jobs in YAWP. So we should extend the IONs.

As far as i know accuweather is no supporting detail maps like weather.com - and I could not find any details weather maps from accuweather in CWP either. KDE is offering an ION for weather.com but this is not offering much information and is not offering satellite maps either. Therefore I was playing with the idea of writing another ION for weather.com based on the source code of liquid weather - but i think this would break some legal issues - this might be the reason why KDE was using a different API to request the weather information from weather.com.

Long story short: I do not know how to solve your request to show detail maps, right now.

Thanks for the updated version. I used this a few months back, but the fonts were quite ugly (Air theme, black fonts.) Now I tried it again since I saw a few updates were done, and the black fonts now look very nice!

Thanks for this plasmoid. It's now the weather plasmoid I prefer.

 Get ready for KDE 4.5

Yawp will need to be patched for KDE 4.5. Here are some instructions which seem to work, from ArchLinux discussions.

"The package don't build for kde 4.5 because some preprocess directive don't test it. A quick&dirty patch, just test for kde 4.x with x >=4 (x == 4 before).

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
