Description:

Yet Another Weather Plasmoid.
There is nothing wrong with the ones that exist, I just wanted something more colorful.

This plasmoid belongs to other people, it would not be where it is without their help. See the README.

Please help with additional themes and translations, thanks.

For the latest unstable version:
svn co https://yawp.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/yawp/trunk yawp

INSTALL NOTES
tar -jxf yawp*
cd yawp*
./install.sh

Changelog:

0.4.5 (23 Mar 2013)
* Bugfix: Desktop mode is not reusing applet size from last session.
* Bugfix: yaWP crashes in systemtray with KDE 4.10

0.4.4 (17 Mar 2012)
* New desktop painter has been added. Yawp can be configured to use the traditional or the new one for desktop and/or for popup window.
* Panel painter has been rewritten
* Initialization stuff of yawp has been moved to init method, because yawp crashes on KDE 4.8 due to the usage of not initialized components.
* Usage of KMessageBox has been replaced within DlgAddCity, otherwise yawp crashes on KDE 4.8.5 (some earlier versions might be included as well).
Using KMessageBoxes within KConfigDialog (yawp settings dialog) still works as expected.
* Google ION has been removed, because Google does not support this service any longer.
* Updating and fixing translations
* Bugfix: yaWP did not update weatherdata periodically after hibernation - it is working now

0.4.3 (17 Apr 2012)
* Show current RealFeel temperature under current temperature (thanks to Alain Soucy)
* Non-modale city search dialog
* Implementing public slot configChanged() to behave like a standard plasmoid - yaWP can be configured from external programs (e.g.: javascript)
* changing internal handling of extender (KDE 4.8 only) - when plasmoid will be used in desktop mode extender is not used and will be destroyed, when plasmoid is moved to panel a new extender will be created
* little tweaks to horizontal panel layout, adding more spaces between icons
* Ukrainian translation updated (Thanks to Yuri Chornoivan)

0.4.2 (04 Jan 2012)
* Adapting yaWP to KDE 4.8
* ION AccuWeather is showing closer maps for cities of the United States.
* Workaround crashes in city search dialog in KDE >= 4.7.4
* Frech and Slovak trasnlation updated
* Fixes in Wunderground ION
* Fix double translation for Short day names

0.4.1 (03 Dec 2011)
* Add ability to open forecast in browser (if URL is provided by ION)
* ION wunderground is returning a sorted list of cities (airport stations are listed on top of list,
because in general terms this station type contains more weather information than the personal weather station type).
* ION Wunderground is supporting satellite maps as well
* ION accuweather is not using a config-file for satellite image mapping any longer (feature has been added in version 0.4.0
but I think this was a stupid idea). Satellite images will be hard coded mapped to location in ION.
* Translations updated (CZ, FR)
* Several little bug fixes - including geometry issues

0.4.0 (13 Nov 2011)
* Bugfix: text in animation area jumps up or down at start and at the end of animation
* applets painting methods has been extracted and rewritten, for re-use and hopefully the new painting methods are well structured
* yaWP supports externder items (in panel mode only) - extender item interacts with user like desktop mode.
In panel mode:
When user clicks on the applet (but not on the weather forecast icons) the extender pops up.
The behavior of the applet for clicking on the weather forecast icons can be configured in the config dialog on page "Panel"
option "Use interactive weather icons". When this option is checked the weather icon will toggle between day and night
(in case we have weather information for day and night) otherwise the extender will appear.
* Removes old files from cache directory $HOME/.cache/yawp on a regular base.
* The install script install.sh uses more CPU cores if available. Could be override by -j script option.
* Turkish translation (thanks to Hasan Kiran)
* Czech, Slovak and French translation updated
* Changing unit system in config dialog will force auto-update.
* AccuWeather will use a config file for satellite mapping.

0.3.6 (12 Dec 2010)
* Traverse through all locations periodically (optional)
* Page 'Settings' from config-dialog has been redesigned to gain more space
* Fixing update bug in Wunderground Ion.
* Algorithm that is doing the text layout for the details area has been simplified
* Fix API breakage in 4.5.2/4.6

0.3.5 (8 Oct 2010)
* Fix compilation error on KDE 4.5.2
* Patching ions to work with new weather-data-engine, thanks to Raymond Wooninck
* Fixing legal issues (The source code of the standard ions used as the base)
* Ion is checking state of pressure, instead of just coping the data
* Fix issues with sunrise/sunset
* Prefer millimeters of mecrcury to torr on KDE 4.5
* Fix KDE version check - consistently use KDE_IS_VERSION

0.3.4 (7 Jul 2010)
* Fix torr description.
* Fix problems with some ions when yawp runs under ru locale
* Fix compilation error on PCBSD (thanks vvheritagevv) for patch.
* Update translations cs, fr, sk

0.3.3 (12 Jun 2010)

* Added word-wrap for details-property.
* Added new ion for wunderground weather service
* Showing observation time (the time when weather-service-provider has been updated the weather data) on details page, when specific ion supports this feature.
Ion Google, AccuWeather and Wunderground returning observation time, as well.
* Timestamps for sunrise and sunset will be returned in the new timestamp format (when compiling with kde 4.3 and above - timestamps in the standard ions had been changed)
* Google is returning more information of location to show the right flag. User needs to entered a more specific search text to add a new city.
* Timezone management

 Network bug USB wireless modem

 by belgix on: Dec 29 2009

Score 50%

For some reasons, yawp doesn't works (no connectivity) on my laptop when I'm using my USB wireless modem alone but works fine if I'm using the wireless card on my laptop. This issue is specific to yawp as any other applications works fine when I'm using this USB modem to connect to the Internet.

The funny thing with this issue is to get yawp working (with this USB modem) wicd must have some level of connectivity with a network (even if the network is NOT connected to the Internet!!!).

Yhe problem might be because yamp is relying to KDE/solid a little bit too much (wicd doesn't support USB wireless modem yet).

Expected results : Yawp working as any others applications when I'm using my USB dongle to connect to the Internet.

KDE & kppp 4.3.4
wicd 1.7.0

Have you tried some other weather-applets as well (e.g.: weather-forecast and weatherstation) in order to check if this applets have the same network problem. Because yawp is not really using network specific code - but probably the weather-data-engine does...

The basic plasma_pyweather (http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/plasma_pyweather?content=110137) works fine (no dodgy trick required) but I don't know if this guy is using the weather-data-engine.

Take a look at the top of previous page. You have the same problem. The perl-plasmoid is downloading the data by its own and is not using weather-data-engines and ions at all. That is why i asked you if weather-station or weather-forecast is working properly. But i doubt it, so it is not a yawp-specific problem.

You need a plasmoid-network-manager - i made good experiences with wicd

Please try to avoid to ask questions again and again, reading the the messages from other users at the last few pages in order to add a new bug.

I have just updated kubuntu up-to kde 4.4
Under 4.3 it worked perfect (added via synaptic from your repo)
But now it will not load, I get the message "This object cannot be created for the following reason.
Could not find requested components:yawp.
Installed version is.
0.3.2~karmic~ppa2
Have been through all posts but nothing seemed to apply to this situation.
If you need more info please let me know.
And a quick thanks for an awesome widget.

Is the installed yaWP version for KDE 4.4? I think it is not compatible. Could you try to compile the svn version? Or look for KDE 4.4 package version.

 kde4.4

the version installed was 0.3.2
It should be ok with 4.4
Unfortunately kubuntu and cmake throws up loads of compile errors which is why i added the repo.
I also think this problem was a system plasma error problem more than a widget error. I have been getting plasma crashes/freeze ups and all sorts of problems.
It was a kubuntu install using a home directory from a previous suse11.2 install.
one of which is accuweather which caused a system-wide crash and lock up no matter which weather plasmoid i used.
I have now gone back to kde 4.3 until 4.4 matures a bit more.
Thanks for your speedy reply.

When you install a program/applet on a new/other operating system than you should recompile it on a clean source-code first. This means rm -r build and re-run the install-script again in order to reconfigure the source code an recompile it for a certain os.

Installing an applet which has been compiled for another os/kde version would explain your system crashes...

I confirm that.
I test fedora 13 rawhide, and in the begin kde was 4.3.
After update to kde 4.4, yawp don't work, I uninstall it by make-uninstall and make clean, and re-install yawp by compiling, make and make-install;
And yawp work with kde 4.4

 suggestion: last update time

 by ryampolsky on: Jan 10 2010

I love your applet. Especially now that I've moved it to my taskbar (I don't get the point of desktop widgets when you need to 'show desktop' to see them - the mouse-over display is really nice).

Just one problem. I run Mandriva 2010, and the system boots so fast that my cable modem isn't ready by the time I'm up and logged in. By then YaWP has already tried to refresh itself and failed, displaying cached info from the prior day.

It'd be nice if the mouse-over display showed the date and time it last fetched the info. That way, I'd know if it's fresh or not (actually, I think it reports 'cached' if it's not fresh, but I think the time display might be nicer).

Also, it might be nice to have an option to retry a failed fetch several times at a higher than normal rate - that way I wouldn't have to do a manual refresh when my connection comes up. (or even, if possible, 'listen' for the connection becoming available and retry then).

Anyway, not complaining. It's a really handy applet.

Hi,
In the actual version is a option to delay the initial refresh.

And yes, there should be possible to show the last update time in tooltip. I'll look on it later this week.

Marián

Re: connection detect

It should works if you have proper installed the solid network backend. NetworkManager or Wicd.

Unfortunately there is not any simple backend to just detect whether is the line connected or not. E.g. based on udev.

 Accuwheather / google / 0.3.2

I'm currently using yawp 0.3.2 on Fedora 12 w/ KDE 4.4RC1.
When I use google as a provider, the number of days in the forecast configuration doesn't seem to change anything - read: I always get 3 days of forecast.

If I switch to accuwheather provider, the widgets turn gray, and I only see a "Forecast details... Supported by http://www.accuweather.com" message.

Hi,
the number of icon is related only to panel. It has not impact when YaWP is on desktop.

The Accuweather problem happen sometimes, it is a issue on accuweather side. Try later or try different city.

Marián

What is the city name, accuweather can not show? Some cities like "LES MILLES, France" have some special characters in the location-code. We fixed this problem for '+' in location-code for ion_accuweather.

I'm trying two cities (or actually one city and one measurement posts):

Tel-Aviv, Israel (City), and Ben-Gurion, Israel (Measurement post).

Both work (as in currently *) just fine on all of my KDE 4.3 based workstation.
The problem is seems to effect KDE 4.4 and the latest YaWP only.

* Fedora's KDE 4.3 YaWP still uses kde-plasma-yawp-0.2.3.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
 Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
 I do not like some of the changes.
 KDE is taking the wrong way.
 I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
 I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
