Updated:  Dec 26 2009

Description:

http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/KDE/kdeplasma-addons/applets/weather/

Old description:

If you have other distributions please look for packages with similar names.

TESTED:
I have tested it in Intrepid and Hardy

INSTALL:

cd plasma-weatherforecast-0.???
mkdir build
cd build
cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=`kde4-config --prefix` --debug-output ..

UNINSTALL:
The plasmoid installs 3 files only; just delete them.
/usr/lib/kde4/plasma_applet_simpleweatherforecast.so
/usr/share/kde4/services/plasma-applet-simpleweatherforecast.desktop
/usr/share/kde4/apps/desktoptheme/default/widgets/plasma-simpleweatherforecast.svg

(my prefix is
$> kde4-config --prefix or kde-config --prefix
/usr
). Look for your prefix and then delete these files

UPDATE:
If you update the plasmoid please log out of KDE and then login. Otherwise you will get the _old_ version only.

or
kquitapp plasma
kbuildsycoca4
nohup plasma &

 Fonts

My fonts look really crummy compared to yours. They're all jagged, not smooth at all. I'd provide a screenshot if that was possible here. :-)

Any suggestions? I'm using Kubuntu 8.10. Great plasmoid though, much better than the standard one!

Thanks!

I was using oxygen theme. Now I'm using the silicon theme which I think is the theme in the author's screenshot. However, my problem was not the theme but the anti-aliasing settings:

System Settings --> Appearance --> Fonts

I had to enable anti-aliasing and under the configure button, I have checked both exclude range (8-15p) and use sub-pixel rendering (RGB/Full).

This seemed to solve the problem of ugly fonts in this weather plasmoid as long as I have it large enough (since I have the range excluded checked). I like to have some of the smaller fonts excluded because they look better in the rest of the system and in Firefox.

Thanks for the reply!

 Great work! (..but tiny issue)

 by voidpl on: Nov 22 2008

I was really looking forward to see the plasmoid that would be something like Liquid Weather - and your work is very nice :)

Yet, I've noticed one tiny issue: If I'm offline at startup, it looks weird - I can see the entire iconsets drawn on the plasmoid, probably because weather data cannot be downloaded, so maybe it would be possible to handle such situation in some way (displaying some message or displaying last available weather data )
Anyway, I don't find this issue important, but only letting you know about it :)

Great job!
Regards,

Great work, looks really nice. Thank you

Do you have any plans to expand it (e.g., sunrise, sunset, wind speed)?

 wget dep and proxy support

 by Yannig on: Nov 26 2008

Score 50%

To remove the call of wget within the plasmoid, add a new include in top of plasma-weatherforecast.cpp :
...
#include <kio/job.h>
...

And change collectData method with the one bellow :

void Plasma_Weather::collectData()
{
//retrive the weather file
QString url = "http://weather.yahooapis.com/forecastrss?p=" + zip;

if(tempType == "C")
{
url.append("&u=c");
}

KIO::file_copy(url, QDir::homePath() + "/.weather.xml", -1, KIO::Overwrite | KIO::HideProgressInfo);
}

In CMakeList.txt, change the line target_link_libraries with the following one :
target_link_libraries(plasma_applet_weatherforecast
${PLASMA_LIBS} ${KDE4_KDEUI_LIBS} ${KDE4_KIO_LIBS})

Now, the plasmoid do not need wget anymore and as a nice side effect, you get proxy support.

You can retrieve the diff here : http://pastebin.com/m3ef324e5

Regards,

Yannig

Never mind!

E edited your code to better align things and to use "+" sign for positive temperatures.

If you would like to have the modified version, leave me a private message here on kde-look.org.

same problem here. fonts worked nice in version 0.2

maybe you should add the possibility to change fonts+size manually (like in "adjustable clock" plasmoid)

I don't think it's becouse the font size. More likely becouse the font dpi. I think the only difference between the Mandriva 2009 I have on the laptop and on the desktop computers is the font dpi. On the desktop I use 100dpi fonts, on the laptop the default 75dpi fonts.
If anyone needs my version, leave me a private message with your email address, i'll mail it to you.

I don't want to put it here, becouse it would not be fair for the author ... it is his credit, I marely made small modifications.

 0.3 version - icon theme

 by hash87 on: Nov 26 2008

Score 50%

In the new 0.3 version of the plasmoid there is no icon theme set by default. The only way to make the icons appear is manually setting the following path in plasmoid configure options:

/usr/share/apps/desktoptheme/default/widgets/plasma-weatherforecast.svg

Yes I saw in the code, it is still set by default to weather.svg, maybe the author will correct this for the nex release.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
 It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
 Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
 Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
 Gnome 3 default shell is much better
 I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
 None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
