Description:

This mockup is meant to be a concept for a menu system which would combine the ideas behind the efficient KDE 3.x K Menu and the multi-functional Kickoff while providing visual integration with Plasma.

An explanation of the design:

- Favorite programs use larger icons and are located at the bottom for easy access.

- The folders for programs would operate in a similar manner as the traditional K Menu. To reduce the problem of wide, narrow rows, submenus would appear as close to the mouse cursor as possible without overlapping any text or content.

- Dimmed icons for different categories of the menu (pictured: Places, Recent Files, Information, and Power options) are shown surrounding the user\'s account picture. On mouse or keyboard focus, the relevant icon would be changed to its full brightness.

- On click, category buttons would change the main panel view to correspond with the option selected by the user. The default \"applications and favorites\" view could be restored by typing [Escape] or clicking on the user icon.

- The user\'s icon is shown at the top, along with their username. When hovering over a category icon, this text would change to reflect the content the user has focus on.

- Typing with the menu open would automatically start a search, while the main view could be restored by either clicking on the user icon or pressing [Escape].

I would love to this kind of menu as a replacement for the Kickoff menu wich is a bit unhandy.

I always use the Kmenu now, in KDE 3.5 but i have the aero-G look on my desktop, so this menu would fit so good!

Indeed very good.
Let's hope plasma devs stop a minute here in kde-look and see what users really want instead of chosing something like that horrible suse-menu :-P

Unfortunately for you, many of us actually like the "SUSE Menu", kickoff is an improvement to the old menu "system"

Kickoff is an improvement but it has many usability problems and inconstancy and that's why so many people complain about it.

For exemple, it's great when its switch tabs hovering the icon, but it's painful to have to click on a small arrow to return from a submenu. It's inconsistent because sometimes you click, sometimes you hover, and that's confusing.

I use it now, but i think it could be much better, that's why is important to listen to users complains sometimes.

But I think that's not a problem for kde dev team, because I think kickoff it's just a temporary solution until Raptor becomes ready

I think plasma devs (and all others) do what they can and what they think is good for KDE :)

(well, I don't like the kickoff menu but the facilities of KDE4 should bring us a lot of nice things (Lancelot, Raptor...)

Just wait

BTW: the menu design of tmccn is really cool

I haven't tried any of the other
kmenu improvements,
because they are "too much".

But this one is simple,
nice looking,
and adds a little more functionality.

i have seen a lot of screenshots of Raptor, and i really like the design, but i think the usability is not good.
its basicly a sidescrolling menu, and yes again u have to scroll, wich i dont like.

In kickoff u also have to scroll sideways, wich disturbs the overview. It takes too much time to scroll from left to right, and up and down, and besides, the Kickoff menu is too wide also.the little arrow buttons are too small, so its not good for fast navigation.

The way i see THIS well designed menu, is a kmenu, in Raptor style, and you dont need to click sideways, just open the menu and hover, and the submenus will popup and close, and you always will see the entire menu, instead of moving the main groups out of the screen.

I really like this design and it would fit well to KDE 4. I sure hope that this menu will come out, cause i really want this. another idea is, to make this menu, as second navigation option of Raptor, cause it fits well in Raptors design.

untill then, many of us still have to use Kmenu...

Besides... a " 91% good " score by the community does mean something or not?
It shows that the community "demands" that this menu will be developed! :)

I'm glad you like the menu idea. I would also be interested in seeing this mockup become a menu alternative for KDE, however I don't have any experience with Qt or Plasma.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
