Description:

"Steel Icons" is an icon set for KDE comprised of Steel/Silver icons with shadows. I know everybody loves the Crystal/Aquafusion/Marbles Icons (with the exception of aquafusion, I do -- its just too blue! :) but I saw Metrope, and thought, wow, those don't look like they're trying to be OS X, they look like, well, like Linux (actually, like KDE; I hate Gnome's look, it just looks childish). So I set out to design some icons that weren't based on OS X, Windows, or who-knows what else. Tell me what you think, please.

Changelog:

1.2.5 - Straightened out version numbers with themes.freshmeat.org, added apps/devices, 153 icons

02/12/03 - New Screenshots (no liquid-stipples)

0.3 - Completely redone mimetypes, redone apps, and new apps/filesystems icons. Design is generally softer and less harsh

0.2 - Hard drive icons have been added for KDE, Linux, Windows, and MacOS. There are also icons in different colors for a few apps, and the old trash icon has been replaced.

0.1 - Initial Release

The wallpaper is one of mine, you can get it at http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=3642 -- The screenshot is of it, but inverted.

 Nice changes

Yes, the colour is nice, but I'm not sure about the green...

I love all of the colours in the fullscreen snapshot, especially the new bronzed CD and the red (a very tasty combination).

The blue and green in both of the browser (?) icons as well, though the green in the one without the cogs is a bit strong (more pastel would be nicer).

I think where colour is used, a more pastel scheme works better than metallic, which, to me at least. just ends up looking a little sickly.

I'm becoming your most persistent critic ;)

And what would I be without you, Telex? The browser (?) icons aren't browsers (at least, none of the new browser icons are green) - the new icons (l-r) are Opera, kppp, konsole, linux drive,Kate,KMail,kFind,KDE drive, hard drive, red folder, tar, trash, windows drive, and apple drive.

But I will tone down some of the shockingly bright colors and see how they look. thx!

 KDE Style

Hey, I've always wanted to create a KDE widget style that looks metal. Since you have some experience on making these icons looking like steel, do you think you could make a good metallic widget style? I'm picturing it more shiny than the icons. I guess similar shapes to Aqua, but using chrome instead of plastic.

I wouldn't like the still-only version, but it is getting better as you put more colors in it.
Still, I think there are too many grays, especially dark ones.
I think you should aim at making a theme that looks metallish in the way it reflects and feels, but without a dominant color.
That would be a great service to the kde, a stylish icon theme that would fit with any colorscheme or style or windec.

Good job

Daniele

How did you get shadows on the icon-texts on your desktop, is that an option for kde 3.1 or something (didn't see it when i tried rc3)
I want that on my desktop!!!

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
