Description:

Some improvements I think will increase usability of Kmenu.

The Kmenu will have a toolbar at top with icons to change content of menu:

* Recent open applications menu
* All applications menu
* Menu for quick access to home directory
* Favorites menu
* Help menu per application

Will have an applets area, like "find file/folder" applet showed at mockup.

Download link is to a tarball with various mockups for a new kmenu, plus these screenshots.

Please give me feedback.

Changelog:

0.4
* Better menu organization
* Quick access to files, favorites, command execution, help and applications
* Added a suspend button

0.3
* Replace icon bar for menu switches
* Replace hipotetic run applet by find file/folder applet
* Add a button for configure Kmenu

0.2
* Add icon for browse files to run
* Better identification of menu modifiers buttons
* Choose buttons (shot 1) or expansive menus (shot 2) when configuring kmenu

but even nicer are the call-out boxes beside the menu.... they should be implemented in KDE 4. You should submit it as a request to kde-bugs. The current call-out boxes in 3.4 are bit too ugly (and BIG)....

(Ie: the call out boxes when you place your mouse over an icon on the toolbar)

Good idea. I like this very much and small things like these can make Linux shine to newbies who love the eye-candy.

I would love to see this with my next version of KDE! Support from me.

I've been looking into making some changes in kmenu (for personal use) for a while now, but I couldn't find the right idea so I never got started.
I really like your idea, it's compact and its nice.
You wrote that the items in the toolbar will change to content of the menu, I can understand that for "Recent Applications" , "All Applications" and "Favorite Menu", but "Home Menu" and "Help Menu" shouldn't those two be shortcuts for "kfmclient openProfile filemanagement" and "khelpcenter"?

And are you going to make these changes yourself? Have you proposed these change to the kdedevelopers? Or are you looking for people to do it?

 Tooltips..

I also like your idea for the K-Menu. But I think, I saw this ideas in the "Plasma" discussion forums, perhaps that's you? :)

But what I actually wanted to say is: You dudes write, how cool these tool-tips are... okay, that must be in the eye of the viewer, but I think those grey, fancy-less boxes won't attract other users...
I thought they were just for explaining the elements in the K-Menu, not an idea for tool-tips, weren't they?

Cheers,
WK

Objective is to show kmenu, not tooltips. Tooltips here is only a semi-transparent layer in Gimp.

This idea was reported on Plasma forums.

 Not Obvious

There are a couple of problems with this idea.

First, No one will know what the hell those buttons at the top of the menu mean until they click them. Even then, they may not catch on to the idea of how the menu changes when they click on a button. They may see that the menu changes but not really know what it is changing into.

Second, The buttons on the top don't express to a user that they'll do anything at all. A basic user will just think it's menu art or something that's just a KDE thing. Maybe if you made the images tabs, and not buttons, then you might convey that those pictures actually change something. Of course, making the images look like tabs would then make the menu look uglier than a Kmenu being beating with an ugly tree (roots and all.)

The idea is very nice. I like the idea of category menus within one menu. However, the presentation isn't quite right. And I would hate to have to make a little pop-up bubble just to point out what the images above the menu were for. There is so much coming at someone who is using the KDE system for the first time.

Maybe if there was a small label above the images that pointed out that these images change the menu. Say something like 'categories...' just above the images and then hovering over the images produces a tool-tip. Also make the time delay for the tool-tip to appear very low like 1800ms and the fade-away time for the tool-tip to happen 5300ms after the appearance.

It really a tough call on how to do this a good way that people could pick up in no time flat, but it is a really good idea if done right.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
 Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
 I do not like some of the changes.
 KDE is taking the wrong way.
 I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
 I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
