Description:

weAreGear is an SVG Wallpaper created with Inkscape 0.40. The idea is that KDE is here to stay, and nothing will change that. The wallpaper has a transparent background allowing you to choose any color from your desktop environment. It is made to look good with almost any color background, but I recommend the use of blues, greens, or purples of varying saturations and values.

I would like to ask anyone with a pre-release of KDE 3.4 to test out the wallpaper and let me know how well it renders. If it doesn't look just like the screenshots, please let me know.

Changelog:

0.4.2 - Added some slight detail (missing lines), removed obsolete screenshots, and added png version at:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=19510
...as requested by some of you.
0.4.1 - Made further modifications to background gradients, and brightened up the letters "KDE" (see screenshot 1)
0.4 - Many changes...
* Slogan removed
* 1's & 0's removed
* Gear enlargened
* various 'sparks' and bubbles repositioned
* background gradients modified
* sparkles simplified
These changes were made based on the suggestions of several of you. They are meant to give a simpler, less distracting, more elegant look. Cutting down on render time was also a consideration. I would like to thank you all for your helpful advice.

0.3 - First released version.

0.2 - (Never released) Was more colorful, had gradient problems, and didn't look very good on very light, or very dark backgrounds.

0.1 - (Never released) The first black-and-white-line layout

Thank you very much! BTW, I never thanked you for your earlier comment about the rendering in 3.4. I want to take this opportunity to remedy this oversight. I hope you'll forgive me. You were very helpful to me, since I don't yet have a copy of 3.4 installed. Without the help of others such as yourself, I would be making a real shot in the dark. Thanks.

How did you get that 3d effect with the gear?

Basically, what I did is draw a flat gear by making a circle, then drawing a cog, copying and rotating. Then I did a combination of scaling and skewing to get the right look.

 Howto render.

How to render this wallpaper to get nice gradients. I've exported it via Inkscape and fading isn't smooth.

Anybody can send me a link or whole wallpaper (arael at fov dot pl) to let me compare it. Thanks.

Anyway - very good job.

Try setting blue background color (rather bright blue). Can you see (especially in bottom right corner) that this round brightening's fading isn't smooth enough? I'm guessing that in SVG gradient is perfectly smooth. Can you see that too?

I've added in gimp new layer, saved to png and now I've got perfectly smooth picture.

This is KDE rendering problem IMO. Can someone check this and eventually forward into right hands (KDE bugs?).

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
 It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
 Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
 Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
 Gnome 3 default shell is much better
 I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
 None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
