Description:

weAreGear is an SVG Wallpaper created with Inkscape 0.40. The idea is that KDE is here to stay, and nothing will change that. The wallpaper has a transparent background allowing you to choose any color from your desktop environment. It is made to look good with almost any color background, but I recommend the use of blues, greens, or purples of varying saturations and values.

I would like to ask anyone with a pre-release of KDE 3.4 to test out the wallpaper and let me know how well it renders. If it doesn't look just like the screenshots, please let me know.

Changelog:

0.4.2 - Added some slight detail (missing lines), removed obsolete screenshots, and added png version at:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=19510
...as requested by some of you.
0.4.1 - Made further modifications to background gradients, and brightened up the letters "KDE" (see screenshot 1)
0.4 - Many changes...
* Slogan removed
* 1's & 0's removed
* Gear enlargened
* various 'sparks' and bubbles repositioned
* background gradients modified
* sparkles simplified
These changes were made based on the suggestions of several of you. They are meant to give a simpler, less distracting, more elegant look. Cutting down on render time was also a consideration. I would like to thank you all for your helpful advice.

0.3 - First released version.

0.2 - (Never released) Was more colorful, had gradient problems, and didn't look very good on very light, or very dark backgrounds.

0.1 - (Never released) The first black-and-white-line layout

Great work, although without the words I would like it even more. The pic kind of says it all already with out the phrases.

regards,
iges.

Thanks for the feedback... I'm seriously considering removing the words... it would have the added benefit of less objects, possibly helping it render faster.

 Tried it on KDE 3.4

Hi, I'm running KDE CVS HEAD (3.4) and I just tried your wallpaper. The render is OK, but:
- The system becomes really slow and unusable using your wallpaper
- When right clicking the desktop -> Configure Desktop, it takes a long time to load complete, taking specially a lot of time to render the Wallpaper preview part.

BTW, I have 512 MB of ram memory, so i don't think it's a memory related problem.

Greetings.

Thanks very much for the tip. This is something that really concerns me... Needless to say, between the 1's and 0's, and all the other 'sparks', I'm using a lot of objects. Maybe I overdid things. I might have to make a 'lite' version everyday use. I'll see what I can work out.

This sounds like a bug or implementation error in kdesktop using ksvg.
(One would expect that once the background is rendered, it is cached, a hash is stored and on repaint() calls the hash will be compared to the current svg hash and on match the cache pixmap is used instead - or even without allowing realtime updates by the hash check)
So best write a bug report to whoever maintains ksvg or kdesktop

I'm using 3.4 with this wallpaper and having no problems. I also have 512 megs of RAM. If I do right-click-->Configure Desktop, it pops right up. So, I don't know what the difference is, but the problems are not universal for users of 3.4. And it looks really great!

Really really great! But the words are a problem i think: they have to be translated into different languages.

Could you leave them?

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
 Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
 I do not like some of the changes.
 KDE is taking the wrong way.
 I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
 I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
