Description:

This item is a part of Steam-Powered Linux KDE theme set.

The idea is to apply steampunk style to every themeable part of KDE-based distro. Any constructive feedback is highly appreciated. I will try to implement your propositions/fix bugs once I have spare time.

Parts of this set currently available:
Plymouth:http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/SteampunK+Plymouth+Theme?content=146030
KDM: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=142139
KSplash: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=142138
QtCurve: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=148276
Dark color scheme: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/SteampunK+Color+Scheme?content=148277
Light color scheme: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/SteampunK+Light+Color+Scheme?content=155868
Wallpapers: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Steampunk+Wallpapers?content=149320
Plasma Desktop theme: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=157926

You can see KDM and KSplash demo video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3ubaXe8wDE
New video will be recorded as soon as the majority of work is done.

KSplash theme notes:
You may encounter weird grey dots during first time you run this theme. It happens when KSplash engine resizes PNG images with transparent pixels on the fly. After resized files are cached, these dots will disappear.

Changelog:

01/15/2012. Added QtCurve and Color Scheme to theme set. Updated appearance of KDM and KSplash themes

10/15/2011. Added Plymouth theme to theme set

I'm glad you liked it. Yes, there were issues, but they became obvious only after update. I had to simplify animations to work the same on different KSplash versions, but I'm fine with the result.

hi, your splash screen looks amazing... but unfortunately i couldn't make it work on my kubuntu, i don't know why!
anyway, i managed to modify it and now i have a static version with no special effects and the usual kde icon animation (but golden colour, to match the theme).
not as cool al yours though:) hope some future version of your theme will work for me too.
i also made a wallpaper, which i think will look great with the steampunk color scheme, here:

p.s. this is not entirely my creation, i modified it from this image http://wallpaperswide.com/the_golden_compass-wallpapers.html

It is strange that my theme doesn't work on Kubuntu, because it was developed under Kubuntu :)
What is not working exactly? I hope I can help you with getting it to work. Are there any error messages when you run "ksplashx SteampunK --test"?

YES! it works now, thanks for the input.
i could only see the buttons on login and couldn't even enter username and password.
also, the splash screen didn't work at all, not even as a test. when i tried to run it from terminal, it said that it failed to load the background, because it was not a png file. so i converted the background files into pngs and changed the links and now it works. thank you, such a simple solution!:)

Hi, it is strange that it wasn't able to load JPG. I tested my themes on different versions of Kubuntu and Archlinux and no problems were encountered. It is possible that KSplash and KDM engines use some library to load images and it failed to load JPGs for some reason.
BTW, nice wallpaper :) Currently, I'm rendering wallpapers that should fit my steampunk theme. One will look like current background image, but with "motion-blurred" gears that represent fully loaded state and the other is simple wooden texture with golden ornaments. I'm also planning to add some kind of logo in center, but not too happy with the result for now :)

Tried to get it to work for debian squeeze but it fails. Even testing it fails.

You have this error message, because older KDE (4.4 and earlier) do not support JPG files in KSplash. I used JPGs to minimize theme size, because PNG files are too big. You could update KDE or save JPG files as PNG and update corresponding file names in description.txt from *.jpg to *.png.

 Dual Screen Problems

 by aschne15 on: May 19 2012

Score 50%

Hello,

nice Splash Screen. But it looks a little bit strange on a Dual-Screen Configuration. The Animations are on the right, the static Picture on the left screen. Is it a Problem with my NVDIA Card or is it a common problem on Dual Screens?

Best regards

Axel

I haven't tested on Dual Screen configurations and don't know why it may happen yet. KSplash engine is very limited, that's why most of KSplash themes are quite simple. I tried to get the best result, but it is possible that in some cases engine does not work in a way I expected. Do other themes work fine?

  Dual Screen Problems

Good Question ;). I've now tested a few and the "normal" ones with the 5-Icon Animation work fine, but some others for example the Anonymous Splash (http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Anonymous+Splash?content=150882) got the some problem. So I guess it's a problem of the Ksplash Engine and I've got to fill out a bug at bugs.kde.org :).

Best Regards

Axel

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
