 too much blank space

by ryampolsky on: Aug 9 2009

Score 50%

Nice looking, but why all the blank space between (and, come to think of it, within) the various sections?

Interestingly, this echos an aesthetic complaint I have about KDE in general (also applies to GNOME to some extent). The toolbars are too big. Probably by only a few pixels here and there, but it's amazing what a visual improvement you get when you eliminate unnecessary spacing.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who like the look the way it is, but I think overly large widgets and unnecessary spacing result in a 'toylike' look - and not in a good way.

That applies to every linux/*nix desktop.

They manage screen real estate like it was chocolate.

However, with kde4, that is improving fast!

The ability to hide file menubar on the fly, changing
toolbar icon size on the fly etc.....

I'm not trying to be a fanboy here, but that was one
of the main reasons why I switched from gnome to
kde.

Sorry.. almost forgot, Very sexy looking mockup man!!

Tho canonical would never use anything that looks
that good! :D

Take a look at their flagship obunto and you'll get
the idea.

Keep your head up high man!

Would be a nice start to...

...improve the kde experience on ubuntu yet the canonical team doesn't seem much keen on working on kubuntu. I really want to believe in karmic as the kde release (or the k release)
Kde4.3 is great and has matured considerably since 4.0 but pulseaudio (oss4?) integration and translations are pathetic. A better selection of default apps would be also nice, Konqueror is history, adding an alternate browser (chakra ships a qt version of Firefox though Im not sure) keeping it gtk free. I always give a laugh at the usplash screen, looks like a winxp startup screen. Shouldn't they be working on os specific matters instead of recoloring an iconset? I keep my fingers crossed for Ayatana.

Sorry for the little off-topic post but what you did is really too good at the moment for kubuntu. Anyway, is there any kubuntu webpage contest? I agree with the blank space post above, there is definitely something you can do about it.

Wow, this is a very beautiful mockup! I really hope the Kubuntu team will make it this way. And I like the spacing btw :)

I hope so, too. Maybe i'll do some little changes in few days. And i think that space is good too, couse it's not cluttered.

Personally, not keen on how many images this would take to make... but then, I guess there's a lot of images on the forum page as well, and that loads quick enough for my tastes...

This one looks even better :)

Only one little thing: the compyright should be 2005-2009, instead of 2005-2008 ;)

It's just a mockup, such things are not so important :)

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
