Minimum required   KDE 4.x

Submitted:  Jun 18 2009
Updated:  Aug 14 2009

Description:

This version is for KDE SC 4.3. If you use KDE SC 4.4 or later, please use the version of Aurorae shipped with KDE SC and do not install the version offered here!

For creating themes it is recommended to use the Aurorae Designer (http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/AuroraeDesigner?content=122763).

Aurorae is a theme engine for KWin window decorations. A howto for creating themes can be found on http://techbase.kde.org/User:Mgraesslin/Aurorae

It was created with the idea of making KWin decorations as themeable as the Plasma desktop shell. Decoration and buttons are SVG files.

This theme engine requires KDE 4.3.

Packages are available for ArchLinux: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=27499

and the ebuild for Gentoo:
http://anpn.de/aurorae-0.2.0.ebuild

In Kubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10 Aurorae can be installed with the package kwin-style-aurorae.

Themes are available in the Aurorae category or can be downloaded directly via GHNS in the configuration module

Changelog:

0.2.1;
* Restrict painting of the svg to the decoration. No need to paint behind the window as it isn't visible anyway. That seems to fix the most painfull performance issues with Aurorae. (svn rev 1011338)

0.2.0:
* Do not hardcode the menu icon size (svn 1007235)
* GHNS (svn 1007228)
* Update window mask when compositing is suspended/resumed (svn 1003235)
* Configurable text shadow (svn 998382)
* Custom button width for each button type (svn 998257)
* Window mask is not calculated from SVG when compositing is active (svn 994961)
* Don't paint deco on other screen when window is maximized (svn 994960)

0.1.1:
* added COPYING file
* synced source changes to rev 990494

0.1.0:
add version to tar-ball

 Button-click trigger area

by yglodt on: Aug 15 2009

Score 50%

Hi,

congrats for Aurorae, it's hot and IMHO the future windec for KDE.

One thing I noticed after switching from Oxygen is that throwing the pointer to top-right and clicking does not close the windows anymore since the "trigger-area" of the close button does not extend over the actual button.

Is this a problem in Aurorae or in the Svg-Theme?

which theme are you using? Laying out the buttons is part of the theme. Nevertheless there could be a bug.

All the themes seem to have this behaviour.

It's visible also through the different hover-colour, which appears only when you hover the close-button, but does not appear when putting the cursor to top-right for maximised windows.

I had a look on how Oxygen solves the problem and yes it has to be fixed in the engine.

I probably will add some new configurable keys for TitleEdgeRight/Left/Top/Bottom in maximized state. So the themes can still define how it should look. But I am unsure about the default value. I prefer a "backward compatible" way by making those values optional.

Just committed the change to svn. Themes can configure the titleEdge values for maximized state, but it defaults to the values configured for normal state. That is nothing is changed for existing themes.

 Occasional slow-downs.

First off, I'll preface this by saying that this is an awesome theme-engine, but I've been experiencing slow-downs when resizing windows, and performing a mouse-over action on the title-bar buttons. I'm not on a powerful machine (Integrated graphics on a core2duo ULV 1.1 ghz processor,) but is this behaviour normal? If so, I'm guessing it's due to the fact that it uses images? I hope it's not me...

I'm using version 0.2.1 (on KDE 4.3.0 on Kubuntu Jaunty and xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.4 (otherwise I don't have window compositing)) and it takes 3-4 seconds just to switch windows using Alt-Tab. This is not an improvement to the previous version. Unless the speed improves dramatically, I cannot use Aurorae (unfortunately).

I can't find the package kwin-aurorae-theme in the repository you referred to!!!
Is there a way not to have kwin-aurorae-theme installed and still install aurorae?

 Performance

Hello,

So I really like this theme and in the newest version you've fixed a lot of issues.

However my biggest problem is that minimizing and maximizing are still sluggish on non-KDE4 apps (Firefox, Amarok 1.4, aMSN, etc).

It otherwise runs very smoothly :)

Hrm, looks like I was still using an older version with my issue above. It is much faster now, although sometimes it still makes the desktop effects sluggish with any application, be it KDE 3 or 4.

Good job, though :)

If you have a good backtrace, please report a bug on http://bugs.kde.org for product "kwin" component "decoration".

Yes in general: please report bugs and feature request on the normal KDE bugtracker. Aurorae will be part of KDE 4.4 and that's easier to handle and requests don't get lost.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
