Device Manager

   1.1.1

Plasmoid Binary

Score 92%
Device Manager

Depends on  KDE 4.x
Downloads:  6274
Submitted:  Jun 1 2009
Updated:  Sep 1 2009

Description:

This applet is discontinued!! Since I'm now working directly on the KDE's Device Notifier I won't add any new feature to this one. I'll fix serious bugs, though.

This is an applet that lets you mount, umount, open your devices.
It has a capacity bar to show the free space, and avoids the ugly window that pops up when you open a device with more than one action in the standard Device Notifier.
It can show all the devices instead of the removable ones only and can do the automount.

I hope you like it!

WARNING! With KDE previous than 4.3 and dark plasma themes you won't be able to read the labels cause the font is dark too.

Changelog:

1.1.1
-shows errors on mounting if any and after the mount the icon changes
-fixed the bug of some .dektop files not readed
-fixed a bug with the show/hide system

1.1
-when a mount is done the icon changes like when you eject something
-the capacity bar grows with the widget
-various code liftings

1.0.2
-added option utf8 when mounting fat volumes

1.0.1
-fixed a regression that caused plasma to freeze

1.0
-added a capacity bar
-added the possibility to lay out the actions in a row instead of in column
-fixed a crash with automount and audio or blanck cd
-maybe other things that I don't remember :p. Find them out by yourself!

0.4
-now the devices can be hidden as you can do in dolphin
-added a button to simply mount the devices as you can umount them

0.3
-added an option to hide the not removable devices
-an option to change the icon instead of show the popup on the insertion of a new device
-a bugfix

0.2
-added a margin in the left of the actions to distinguish them from the devices
-added an option for the automount
-added an option that makes the dialog hide after some time after the insertion of a removable device
-fixed a bug with the scroll
-better code

0.1
initial version

Device manager is coming up very nicely, it has almost all features that one would want from this plasmoid.

keep on the good work.

  vfat without UTF-8

Unfortunately your plasmoid doesn't use the utf8 option on vfat devices, so applications like amarok run into trouble.
I'll take a look at the source to patch it.

i dont't know. the code itself that manages the mounting of the devices wasn't written by me but by strobeam who wrote the device notifier with automount.
maybe we should ask him.

Correct. I used the same patch there and it is honoured. I'm using it right now.
Really strange. mount shows all options except utf8.
I've also tried the bar patch on device_notifier_automount, but that doesn't work.
Unfortunately this plasmoid is useless for me, sniff.

I just tried on my pc. I added the line "options << "utf8";" and, according to /etc/mtab, my fat pendrive is mounted with the utf8 option. But I don't know how to test it with amarok.
Are you sure that, after you applied the patch, you tried the patched plasmoid? Because I noticed that sometimes plasma loads the old versions of the plasmoids just upgraded, because, I think, they are still in memory.

I've had the same problem as bitcrazy, but after adding line "options << "utf8";" and recompiling plasmoid, automount uses utf8 option.
Now there are utf8 characters when i browse my vfat pendrive in dolphin (previously i've had ? instead of an utf8 character)

Don't know. I'll try 1.0.2, when I'm at hme. May you're right and plasma uses the old version, until new login.
To get your plasmoid would save my day.

Hi,

I upgraded from version 0.4 to 1.0.1 and I can no longer see my non-removable drives/partitions. The only fix was to go back to version 0.4. I tried this twice just to verify.
Fedora 11 with up-to-date KDE 4.2.4 RPMs.

Thanks for a great plasmoid.

 Problem with Bibble 5

Hello, your plasmoid is great but there is a problem.
Photos importation is impossible in Bibble 5 when my external is mounted by your "Device Manager".
It works perfectly with the one which comes with KDE4.

Maybe the same problem as the above coment about UTF8?

If you can fix that this plasmoid will become perfect ;)

Thanks.

Hello,

well today everything works fine with bibble 5 and Device Manager.

I had an update for KDE4 this morning. Perhaps it solved my problem.

So everything's ok, thank you for the plasmoid :)

 installation tip

by Superstoned on: Aug 4 2009

btw for installation I think newbies would love the following list of commands:
go into folder were you extracted the files and type:
mkdir build
cd build
cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=`kde4-config --prefix` .. && make -j2
su
(root password)
make install

Any things missing according to cmake should be installed using distribution installation tools. Generally searching the thing it seems to miss works...

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
