Device Manager

Plasmoid Binary

Minimum required   KDE 4.x

Description:

This applet is discontinued!! Since I'm now working directly on the KDE's Device Notifier I won't add any new feature to this one. I'll fix serious bugs, though.

This is an applet that lets you mount, umount, open your devices.
It has a capacity bar to show the free space, and avoids the ugly window that pops up when you open a device with more than one action in the standard Device Notifier.
It can show all the devices instead of the removable ones only and can do the automount.

I hope you like it!

WARNING! With KDE previous than 4.3 and dark plasma themes you won't be able to read the labels cause the font is dark too.

Changelog:

1.1.1
-shows errors on mounting if any and after the mount the icon changes
-fixed the bug of some .dektop files not readed
-fixed a bug with the show/hide system

1.1
-when a mount is done the icon changes like when you eject something
-the capacity bar grows with the widget
-various code liftings

1.0.2
-added option utf8 when mounting fat volumes

1.0.1
-fixed a regression that caused plasma to freeze

1.0
-added a capacity bar
-added the possibility to lay out the actions in a row instead of in column
-fixed a crash with automount and audio or blanck cd
-maybe other things that I don't remember :p. Find them out by yourself!

0.4
-now the devices can be hidden as you can do in dolphin
-added a button to simply mount the devices as you can umount them

0.3
-added an option to hide the not removable devices
-an option to change the icon instead of show the popup on the insertion of a new device
-a bugfix

0.2
-added a margin in the left of the actions to distinguish them from the devices
-added an option for the automount
-added an option that makes the dialog hide after some time after the insertion of a removable device
-fixed a bug with the scroll
-better code

0.1
initial version

 Very nice, but...

I think a device manager should do automount: if I plug-in an external drive, is because I want to use it, so...

Patch for automount:

http://pastebin.com/f3781e300

The code is from "New Device Notifier With Automount" (http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/New+Device+Notifier+with+Automount?content=91517)

Anyway, good job!

do you know what that getuid() on line 63 of the patch is? because there isn't a fuction with this name, nor in my code nor in the code of the device notifier with automount, and, while i can compile it, i can't compile my device manager

The function "getuid()" is part of "unistd.h" (line 16 of the patch: #include <unistd.h> ): it returns the real user ID of the calling process (see man page of "getuid"). This function is in the code of the device notifier with automount, file "devicenotifier_automount.cpp", line 300.

You should try to get your modifications into KDE's Device plasmoid for KDE 4.4

Nice work, if you want, you may add a free space bar (kcapacitybar) to mounted devices, which shows how much free space is left on the device. I already wrote a patch for the stock plasmoid, which is waiting for the trunk freeze to lift off to get in 4.4, here it is:

Please add option for font color. In mostly plasma themes text don't visible.

And make option for hide non-removable device, please.

Sorry for my english.

 Mockup

Very cool, finally a device manager that resembles a mockup I made years ago. :)

Judging from your description/screenshot (I haven't tried the plasmoid yet), I miss the following features:

1. Option to expand/contract actions (think "treeview").
2. Option to not show the popup when a device is inserted. Instead the icon should show that the device has been plugged in (e.g. by flashing/changing color).
3. Option to not show "Storage Volume".
4. Option to not show actions (contracted by default). However, the actions for the latest plugged in device should be shown. (Of course you can show/hide actions for all devices).

Uuh, lots of options. :D
And a last one:
5. Option to let the popup grow instead of showing a scrollbar (not sure about this one).

Keep up the good work!

yes, i took inspiration from your mockup for this plasmoid, and still i think the mockup is really prettier then the reality.

1, 5) you can do it right now. the actions are contracted by default, and clicking on a device you expand them. click another time and they hide.

2, 3, 5) now i don't have so much time, but it is probable i'll add them.

That's cool to hear. :)

Do you think you could draw a triangle or something to show that the devices are expandable/contactable?

Again, thanks for working on this!

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
