Description:

This is a fork of mbaszczewskis STasks plasmoid. For the original STasks code go there:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/STasks?content=99739

This taskbar replacement has window peeking similar to Windows 7 when you use the kwin 'highlight window' effect. Even if this effect is not used you can click the tooltip in order to activate the corresponding window.

About Launcher Support, Grouping and Sorting:
A feature often requested in the comments is support for launchers and a more comprehensive context menu. Because the information about which task items there are, their grouping, sorting and state (minimized, demands attention, is active, ...) and even their context menu is all provided by libtaskmanager, such feature requests should be directed to kdelibs. I wrote a wishlist entry in the kde bugtracker for these features: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=207902 If you want this feature vote for this wish.

Update:
Launcher support exists in KDE 4.6. I will incorporate this feature once KDE 4.6 is available in Fedora (and I have time).

Update 2:
I pulled all changes made by flupp and jimi312, which amongst other things add launcher support. You can download the most recent source directly from the mercurial repository:
https://bitbucket.org/panzi/smooth-tasks/get/tip.tar.bz2

However, because I experienced some bugs with the launcher support (sometimes they are shown when the associated app is running and sometimes they are not shown when the associated app is not running) I did not make a new release yet. If I can find the bugs in a few hours tomorrow (2nd Apr 2011) or flupp/jimi312 fix them I will make a new release. I don't know how much time I have to work on Smooth Tasks. :/

Update 3:
The mentioned bugs concerning launchers seem also to be present with KDE's original taskbar, so I think the bug lies in libtaskmanager and not in Smooth Tasks.

Bugreports and Wishes:
http://bitbucket.org/panzi/smooth-tasks/issues/

Packages:
Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora have official packages.

Fedora:
sudo yum install kde-plasma-smooth-tasks

And to get meaningful backtraces:
sudo debuginfo-install kde-plasma-smooth-tasks

Note: I didn't check the validity of any of these packages!

Poll: Which Layout should stay?
I have created a poll about which of the various layouts supported by Smooth Tasks should be kept and which I can drop:
http://twtpoll.com/dm5m96

Please participate in this poll so I know whether I have to bother with supporting all of the currently provided layouts. In case you do not use multiple rows please choose the first option. In this case most layouts should look the same anyway.

Changelog:

wip 2010-11-06:
FIX: drop whole groups onto pager (removed workaround for KDE < 4.5 which could not handle groups at all)
FIX: when dragging a task only a tiny bit it's position was not reset
Maybe FIX: a very rare tooltip positioning bug (I have o wait if it reoccurs)

wip 2010-11-05 update 1:
FIX: fixed unwanted highlight behaviour change which reintroduces flickering :(

wip 2010-11-05:
FIX: tooltip appearance and background blur under KDE 4.5 (someone once sent me a patch for this but I cant find this message any more so I figured it out myself by looking at KDE sources)
FIX: less flickering for the kwin highlight effect

wip 2010-02-27:
FIX: less flickering for the window preview effect because I removed the kwin highlight effect bug workaround (that bug was obviously fixed in kde 4.4)
FIX: crash when right-click on startup item, thanks to anonymous

wip 2010-02-13 update 2:
FIX: hopefully fixed bug concerning missing taskbar entries

I'm a student that has other things to do during the semester. Look at when I was most active: it was the summer break. After the summer my commits slowed down considerably. Now in February I *would* have time again. I wanted to use this time to port the animations to kinetic (Qt 4.6). However, Fedora won't have Qt 4.6/KDE 4.4 before the end of February, thus I can't do what I've planned. Currently I ponder over what I should do next.

Another guy created a Smooth Tasks branch with some new features. I will merge these changes once he fixed all regressions and I've tested his changes more:
http://bitbucket.org/flupp/smooth-tasks-fork/wiki/Home

Only after the merge I will add new features or do any other big changes. Otherwise the merge effort would be to high.

This is a fantastic plasmoid!! I use it on all of my KDE 4.3 and 4.4 RC boxes. Some of us are patient. I'm of the "release when ready" camp so I urge you to concentrate on your studies and update Smooth Tasks when you (and the new KDE 4.4 code base) is ready. Thanks for perhaps the most useful plasmoid to exist on KDE 4.x! I really appreciate all your hard work!

I have tested the "new version" and the number of regressions is really high.

Also I would like to know your opinion on the extreme number of possible settings. Is it really necessary to set all the time with ms precision? I think that options slow, normal, fast, immediate would be enough. Also the number of other settings is really huge. The more settings the more bugs there will be.

Oh and about the number and precision of settings: This is something I do not care about. :P I like to be able to configure ms and the margins workaround is a workaround. Every plasma theme needs other values there. Maybe someday a plasma theme will define a clipping region for things like buttons. Then this workaround will not be needed anymore.

Yes, the kde-testing repo has 4.4 already (and I use this repo and therefore have 4.4 and already ported it to 4.4). But afaik the stable repo doesn't have it. And the unstable had it even longer. I use testing.

Mhm, yes. Plasma::Animator is deprecated in KDE 4.4. in favour of Qt 4.6s kinetic animation framework. When there will be packages of Qt 4.6 in kde-testing of Fedora 12 (and I will have time) I will start to port Smooth Tasks to kinetic.

Still, can you also post a stacktrace of the crash? This is what pops up when a KDE application crashes. In order to generate a meaningful stacktrace you have to install debuginfos for KDE and its dependencies and compile Smooth Taks with debug enabled. How you install debuginfos on Ubunto I don't know. Under Fedora you do this by "sudo debuginfo-install kdebase-workspace" (this installs a lot more than needed for Smooth Tasks) or I guess something like "sudo yum install kdelibs-debuginfo qt-debuginfo glibc-debuginfo" for just the necessary debuginfo.

After update I have compiled it again (warnings already posted) and put to panel.

I've released a new version that fixes a bug which I never experienced. I took the fix loosely from this smooth tasks feature fork:
http://bitbucket.org/flupp/smooth-tasks-fork/overview/

Does this fix any crash for anyone here? flupp (the owner of the fork) thinks this is another bug, so I dunno. (Maybe I should try to change TaskbarItem::item from TaskItem* to QPointer<TaskItem> or something similar. Hmm, and maybe I shoud do the "item->item = NULL;" before the "delete titem;".)

Yes fixing the warnings is a lot of work. Plasma::Animator was deprecated, this means all the animations have to be rewritten using kinetic. REwritten. No simple fix.

That there is still a crash is bad, though.

You get debuginfo when you pass the -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=debugfull option to cmake. So you would do something like:

tar xvjf smooth-tasks-src-wip-2010-02-12.tar.bz2
cd smooth-tasks-src-wip-2010-02-12
cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=debugfull ..
make -j 2
sudo make install

Well, there just was the update to KDE 4.4 in Fedora 12 kde-testing so I have now KDE 4.4! I immediately encountered several bugs, one of which was a frequent crash. I fixed these and made a new release. Does this fix some of your problems?

There is no method of smooth tasks in your stacktrace. It is still possible (but not extremely likely) that your crash is still caused by smooth tasks, but there is no clue what could be amiss. However, just from your description under which circumstances the crash happened I think it is indeed the crash I fixed, so please try the new release. (If it still crashes it could also be that I didn't fix it properly. After all its 3:32am here. :/)

Well thats just the generic crash message. The stacktrace is in the second tab. But I guess the crash/stacktrace is the same as above? Some kind of strange double delete. I'd have to reproduce this once KDE 4.4 arrives in Fedora 12. Strange, I can't imagine how this could happen. Such things are not easy to debug (see the crash the original tasks applet had for a long time).

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
