Description:

This is a fork of mbaszczewskis STasks plasmoid. For the original STasks code go there:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/STasks?content=99739

This taskbar replacement has window peeking similar to Windows 7 when you use the kwin 'highlight window' effect. Even if this effect is not used you can click the tooltip in order to activate the corresponding window.

About Launcher Support, Grouping and Sorting:
A feature often requested in the comments is support for launchers and a more comprehensive context menu. Because the information about which task items there are, their grouping, sorting and state (minimized, demands attention, is active, ...) and even their context menu is all provided by libtaskmanager, such feature requests should be directed to kdelibs. I wrote a wishlist entry in the kde bugtracker for these features: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=207902 If you want this feature vote for this wish.

Update:
Launcher support exists in KDE 4.6. I will incorporate this feature once KDE 4.6 is available in Fedora (and I have time).

Update 2:
I pulled all changes made by flupp and jimi312, which amongst other things add launcher support. You can download the most recent source directly from the mercurial repository:
https://bitbucket.org/panzi/smooth-tasks/get/tip.tar.bz2

However, because I experienced some bugs with the launcher support (sometimes they are shown when the associated app is running and sometimes they are not shown when the associated app is not running) I did not make a new release yet. If I can find the bugs in a few hours tomorrow (2nd Apr 2011) or flupp/jimi312 fix them I will make a new release. I don't know how much time I have to work on Smooth Tasks. :/

Update 3:
The mentioned bugs concerning launchers seem also to be present with KDE's original taskbar, so I think the bug lies in libtaskmanager and not in Smooth Tasks.

Bugreports and Wishes:
http://bitbucket.org/panzi/smooth-tasks/issues/

Packages:
Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora have official packages.

Fedora:
sudo yum install kde-plasma-smooth-tasks

And to get meaningful backtraces:
sudo debuginfo-install kde-plasma-smooth-tasks

Note: I didn't check the validity of any of these packages!

Poll: Which Layout should stay?
I have created a poll about which of the various layouts supported by Smooth Tasks should be kept and which I can drop:
http://twtpoll.com/dm5m96

Please participate in this poll so I know whether I have to bother with supporting all of the currently provided layouts. In case you do not use multiple rows please choose the first option. In this case most layouts should look the same anyway.

Changelog:

wip 2010-11-06:
FIX: drop whole groups onto pager (removed workaround for KDE < 4.5 which could not handle groups at all)
FIX: when dragging a task only a tiny bit it's position was not reset
Maybe FIX: a very rare tooltip positioning bug (I have o wait if it reoccurs)

wip 2010-11-05 update 1:
FIX: fixed unwanted highlight behaviour change which reintroduces flickering :(

wip 2010-11-05:
FIX: tooltip appearance and background blur under KDE 4.5 (someone once sent me a patch for this but I cant find this message any more so I figured it out myself by looking at KDE sources)
FIX: less flickering for the kwin highlight effect

wip 2010-02-27:
FIX: less flickering for the window preview effect because I removed the kwin highlight effect bug workaround (that bug was obviously fixed in kde 4.4)
FIX: crash when right-click on startup item, thanks to anonymous

wip 2010-02-13 update 2:
FIX: hopefully fixed bug concerning missing taskbar entries

 New .po for Polish

by warnec on: Jan 23 2010

Score 50%

Here's new Polish translation version:
http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=lwh5otjgybd

One more thing I'd like to ask about - I don't really get the reason why "Fixed Maximum Item Height" layout exists. I mean, even if I decide to alter the maximum item height in the Smooth Task's option, the height doesn't change, because my whole panel's height is set and cannot be changed.

The only thing that changes is the items' width, and I think that's what you wanted the user to change, but couldn't make the width user-specified, because it is dependant on whether the users has items set as squares or rectangles. (I think it might be worth considering to make the square/rectangle option ignored when the "Fixed Maximum Item Height" is set, this way you could make the width user-spacified, not the height)

But what does it really do? Please, post some use-cases. The description is very unclear (at least to me)

The only thing I can come up with is when somebody has ex. a horizontal panel, and always uses maximally ~5 tasks, no more. In that case, the right part of the panel is empty most of the time, and the left part always filled (because there are only a few items most of the time). This way, with this layout one could set that even ~5 tasks fills most of the row, or even full, leading to better space distribution.

Am I right?

Can you please send me the translation per mail? I really don't like such file hosting sites. I never know where to click and then you have to wait minutes. My mail address can be found everywhere in the source, e.g. here:
http://bitbucket.org/panzi/smooth-tasks/src/

The "Fixed Maximum Item Height" layout will most likely be removed in the future. I think "Limited Squeeze" should be good enough for everybody. The other layouts are more or less just experiments I did until I found a good solution (which I didn't, Michal Odstrčil did write this layout).

 Sam Rog's works

Sam Rog's works nicely and is up to date. Users of Karmic Koala have it easiest: at a console simply type "sudo add-apt-repository ppa:samrog131" refresh your package manager, search for and install the latest version of smooth tasks. :)

I think it's kde's problem. It crashes after adding some some preinstalled widgets.

I've uninstalled smooth-tasks and reinstalled it with the same thing happening (plasma crashes and the widget is not added to the panel) I'm running kubuntu with kde 4.4 rc 2.

Could you please add an option to disable mouse scroll over tasks?
I use touch-pad and it is killing me, since i often accidentally trigger it.

 No icon for some apps

 by molecule-eye on: Feb 3 2010

An icon is not displayed for some applications. E.g. Smooth Tasks exhibits this behavior with Spotify in Wine 1.2 and fceux (NES emulator). The icon is displayed when mousing over the task bar.

I notice this only occurs when my panel is set vertically rather than horizontally. Odd.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
