Description:

A Gmail notification widget for your desktop or panel.

This widget is designed to be docked in a panel, or added to your desktop, and display the number of unread messages in multiple Gmail accounts. Clicking on the widget will open the Gmail account in your favorite browser. The widget is written in python, meaning that there is no compiling necessary as long as you have the required script-engine installed.

For more screenshots visit the project homepage.

Features:
- *NEW* New simplified version re-implemented in qml and javascript available for testing (very early version with little error checking and many features missing and/or removed).
- *NEW* New qml version likely requires KDE 4.8 (but may work with KDE 4.7).
- *NEW* Testing qml version will coexist with existing gmail-plasmoid (testing version is called gmail-plasmoid-qml).
- *NEW* Any comments regarding new qml version appreciated.

- Selectable fetching mechanism to address multiple issues (see "Misc." configuration tab)
- Dynamic network connection detection
- Bulgarian, Chinese Traditional, Czech, French, German, Greek, Italian, Polish, Russian, Serbian, Spanish and Ukrainian translations
- Supports multiple Gmail accounts and Gmail labels
- Supports Gmail hosted domains
- Uses KWallet to securely store passwords
- Configurable icon and text font, size and color
- Configurable command run upon clicking the widget
- Configurable notifications using the KDE notification system
- Includes notification for when no unread emails exist (useful for running command to turn off message indicator LEDs, etc.)
- "Check email now" menu option to force email check upon command
- Ability to manually pause and resume email checking
- Threads context menu that shows unread messages on right-click

Please let me know if you find any problems or would like some new features included. The best place to request new features is on the project's homepage.

How to install:
- Download the latest version
- Uninstall any previous version (see instructions below)
- Run the following command in the directory where the file was placed (updated to reflect the actual filename):

Quote:
plasmapkg -i gmail-plasmoid-0.7.20.plasmoid

- The widget should now be listed in your "Add Widgets" screen

Note: If you get missing script-engine errors when loading the widget you need to install the plasma python script-engine (in openSUSE this requires the "python-kdebase4" and "python-devel" packages, in Fedora this requires the "kdebase-workspace-python-applet" package, in Kubuntu this requires the "plasma-scriptengine-python" package)

How to uninstall:
- Run the following command at the command line:

Quote:
plasmapkg -r gmail-plasmoid

While I do not have a Fedora installation at my fingertips to test, try installing the "python-devel" package (if it exists). If that fixes your problem please let me know and I will update the list of packages required for Fedora in the plasmoid's description. Thanks.

 imap idle

Nice plasmoid, did you thought about possibly using gmail imap idle to reduce the time interval?

Thanks for the suggestion, and that is not something that I have looked into. Your idea seems like a good way to implement a Gmail data engine, which would be a cleaner way to implement a mail checker versus what I have produced. Something to think about.

Ok, I'm trying to make a dataengine for imap to make it work with not only gmail. I'll start with only the functions required for an email notifier. I'll recontact you soon.

I’m sorry, could you explain your issue a bit more. I am new to creating translations and I’m not sure what you are trying to say is not working. If it is easier, feel free to send me a personal message either on this site or to my email address. Thanks.

I wasn't able to get through "could not create a python scriptengine for the gmail-plasmoid widget" despite installed plasma-scriptengine-python, though all worked fine in plasmoidviewer. Not the big trick but it all was about reloading plasma with "kquitapp plasma-desktop && plasma-desktop".
Thanks for this great plasmoid.

 Can't install this in Mandriva

 by 5er on: Aug 18 2009

I use Mandriva 2009.1 with KDE 4.3
I can't install this plasmoid. I probably don't have the packages. I had python-kde4 already installed and I could not find any other package that could be related.
When I try to install it, the output just says "Installation of /home/peter/gmail-plasmoid-0.7.7.plasmoid failed."

I actually started having the same problem recently after upgrading some KDE packages under openSUSE, but I have not had a chance to track down the issue. As a temporary fix, you can do the following after uninstalling any old versions:

1) rename the plasmoid file from “.plasmoid” to “.zip”
2) unzip the file
3) in the root directory of the extracted .zip file (the one with metadata.desktop) run “plasmapkg –i .”

Please let me know if these instructions are unclear or if it works for you. Hopefully I will be able to find a real fix soon (but it will likely not be before the weekend).

Thanks for your reply.
I did as you said and I got lots of output. I've seen that the problem was that I trying to install it as root (so all users could use it). Now I've installed it normally and succeeded. But the plasmoid's icon isn't shown in the Add Widgets dialog and when I add it to desktop, plasma crashes. And if I drag it onto the panel nothing happens.

The plasmoid’s icon not showing in the Add Widgets dialog is expected since the icon is not installed until the plasmoid runs for the first time. However, the crashing and taking down all of plasma is (obviously) not expected. Some users have had issues with this plasmoid (and other python plasmoids) not working until the user logs out and then back into KDE.

I can try installing Mandriva in a virtual machine to see if I can reproduce the problem, but I will not be able to do so until this weekend at the earliest. In the mean time, it might be interesting to try installing and using the plasmoid in a new user account. Sometimes cruft seems to build up in the plasma configuration files and issues go away when using a new user account.

Sorry I don’t have an obvious and easy solution for you.

well, first i've reset my plasma, and it didn't help.
then i followed your advices on the 5th page.
and then i thought: "why am i adding it to the desktop? maybe i should add it to the _panel_??".
i tried to add it to the panel: it gave out an error, _but_ it is working now..
you know, this plasmoid is so amazing, that i even thought about reinstalling the whole operating system just to make it work.

Thanks for the kind words and for explaining how you fixed your problem. I’m sure it will be helpful to others with the same issue. Unfortunately I have not had a chance to look into what is causing this issue, but it has been occurring intermittently on my machine even since I upgraded to KDE 4.3.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
