Description:

I find the existence of folders in unproductive an operational system something. This video one shows a way to continue with them, and still thus, to have easy access to the archives. I am not saying that we have that to clonar everything in this video, but it has some interesting things. E becomes angry that it was made using MS Windows...

 KDE app?

by Cypress on: Jun 22 2006

This is NOT a Linux app. It's Windows-based. What's it doing here? I can understand the copy/paste wallpapers and useless stuff that has been posted here lately, but this...

i think the idea is not bad. a superkaramba widget can be made following this concept. it would be cool to have a table like that one in some part of the screen, but not full screen, so your desktop icons can be in your desk too. that way you won't loose the abstraction that the icons give to your desktop, but i think that having something realistic like that would be fun too.

*funny.

ps: it is not a bad idea if u work with many documents at the same time, like when coding or office-working, some things need to be improved though, like file names.

It looks cool, but I'm sceptical to wether it is really useable. Seems like we are just re-creating the limitations we have on a real desktop.

 Interesting

The video is nice but that's all. What's described in it can't be applied to the real world. To be useable, all the concept should be applied to documents previews or --at least-- the filenames should be visible and not only the file types. And since the desktop concept is virtual, only non-realistic physics should apply to the objects.

What I find really interesting is some concepts related to file selection and manipulation. In KDE's single-click environment, selecting objects in drawing a line around them would be very logical. The RPG-style wheel menus are also very nice. Just the right level of eye-candy.

Throwing objects from windows to windows could be a nice replacement for drag'n'drop. Throwing windows from desktops to desktops in an Exposé-like view would be as nice.

Etc, etc. There must probably be some patents protecting the concept of the quasi-realistic desktop as presented in the video but that can't prevent us from ripping simple ideas and implementing them in a KDE way.

FYI: closer to the end of the video, they do show 'real' documents, like photo's, web pages, pdf's that have are displayed as a preview. Though apart from pictures it's still hardly usable. But the concept itself is very good. Worth keeping in the back of our minds. :)

Too bad Macslow has not much time/money to work on it :( I talked to him the other day. Donate some if you can. If he can get enough sponsoring, the project will go open source!

IMHO it is not a good idea to imitate the real world to a point where our chaotic way of arranging real documents get imitated on the screen. When I think about seeing my files cluttered across the computer desktop or piled in stacks that makes me shudder.

I prefer the illusion of order presented by the topmost level of a hierachical filesystem and a desktop search like Beagle to substitute for the order I wasn't capable of creating myself.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
