Sync Everything over Lan

KDE4 Brainstorm

Submitted:  Feb 14 2010

Description:

I have a PC and a Laptop. And one of the issues I have is, that when I write a note in a note-plasmoid on the PC, I don't see it, if I'm working on the laptop.

The same problem is with almost every other program. For instance korganizer, kmail (or thunderbird) nothing gets syncronised.

I always have to use unison and that doesn't do a good job with kde config files.

It would just be great, if I could select for the whole desktop (or only for a single plasmoid), or for different programs, that it should sync the contents with my laptop, as soon as it is available over lan.

I think that would be a huge improvement, and would replace many online services (like google calendar).

Here is an other example: I searched long for a good calendar and the best one is google calendar.
It would be even better, if I could just use KOrganizer. But it's necessary that KOrganizer is syncronised on both my computers, otherwise it is just worthless.

I hope a developer reads this article.
It would be great if this wouldn't be a online service (like mozilla weave), because there are always security concerns.
It should work just in lan.

PS: The download is just a dummy....

 Already possible?

Isn't it already possible (KDE SC 4.4) to share a plasmoid on a network? I haven't used it with the notes plasmoid yet but there should be a config item for it.

About the google calender sync, that is where akonadi is for.

You have some good idea's but I guess some devs were first :)

hmmm I have now on PC a laptop KDE 4.4 but the sharing of widgets over lan doesnt work... for example the rssnow widget: I get a message, that there is a widget available in the network. i add it to my desktop. But instead of the feeds I have on the PC, I get just the standart kde feed.

KDE 4.4 may have already begun to add there network features, but they aren't userfriendly enough and they aren't consequently in every program.

My hole point is, that there are more and more devices in a home, and they are almost always connected to the net and over w/lan to each other. I think the next big step in desktop development is to make the file and configure syncronisation easier.
Otherwise you have to go to internet services.

this would be a killer feature/app. it should also support file- and foldersynchronisation.
I work many times in the library or in the university. When I get home I alwasy have to sync my edited documents or downloaded files manually with my home PC. I always have to look which of the many files I have changed. If there are many subfolders the synchronisation is really tedious (especially if I don't sync immediately).

for files, I can recommend unison. it is really good for files, and I use it for years now. But it doesn't work well for config files.

Yes of course, but the development of unison has been stopped years ago. Also there is no utf8 support in unison.
A new modern tool with KDE integration and automation functions would be fantastic.
Until now synchronisation is doing the same boring job again and again and again...
Synkron have good approaches, but don't support sync over ssh or ftp.

Synkron... I didn't know that... but without ssh support it is useless....

Yes I agree a fully integrated program for syncronisation is important....

Synkron homepage (http://synkron.sourceforge.net/) and for Germans Synkron on Ubuntu Wiki (http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Baustelle/Synkron).
The beginnings look good. If there would be periodically realeases with big feature extensions on every release this could be a good aplication in near times, but I think this wouldn't happen. The last majorrelease is from July 2009 and I don't see any developerambitions to integrate ssh and ftp protocoll support. And this is a main requirement to use it.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
