Wallpaper Plugin "Fly Mode"

Minimum required   KDE 4.x
Downloads:  264
Submitted:  Jan 26 2010

The wallpaper plugin moves a seamless wallpaper picture endlessly over the desktop, making you feel like flying.

Watch out the plugin consumes some cpu time. It's not advisable for weak pc's. I was told that there is no way to improve performance at the moment, due to limitations of the graphics system.

It looks particularly nice with close-ups or pattern.
I couldn't package any samples here because the file size would be to large.

try :

Note : These sample pics are taken from kde-look.org, KDE 4.4, user mirzaD and others

to make an image seamless you can use gimp : Filters->Map->"Make Seamless"

It installs 2 files which can be easily deleted :

installation instruction :

prerequisites : the kdebase-workspace-dev package must be installed

1. unpack archive to any location

2. start konsole and goto build subdirectory of the plasma-wallpaper-FlyMode folder

3. type in konsole :

cmake .. -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=`kde4-config --prefix`

sudo make install

4. it might be necessary to lock out and back in before you can select the FlyMode wallpaper mode

right click desktop -> choose "Desktop Settings" -> select Wallpaper Type : "Fly Mode"

in case you make changes to the project and want to recompile it, just delete all files inside the build directory first

version 0.8 :

- minor changes, fixes and improvements
- supports drag'n drop of pictures on desktop (KDE 4.4)

version 0.7 :

- controls actually work
- better performance
- greater speed range selection
- preview fixed

 High CPU load ?

With the Kubuntu 9.10 (KDE 4.3) the wallpaper is scrolling fine though the CPU load is high.

Thank you !

On my 4 core 3 GHZ pc it uses 15% cpu.
I'm not sure if there is a way to reduce that, because it's an animation that basically repaints the entire screen at least 10 times per second.
But maybe a kde developer can tell me if there is a better way to do the painting.

Just upgraded to KDE 4.4 SC , and now Fly Mode crashes plasma ...
Still using 0.5 from PPA, do you plan to put 0.8 on it ??

 Horizontal ... not

I installed it using your PPA and it runs fine (CPU load Ok) but it only scrolls vertically ... (does not want to change to horizontal)

Unfortunately yes, that spoils the fun a bit.
As i explained above the controls don't work in the desktop setting dialog, but they do work in the plasmawallpaperviewer.
I don't know why, but possibly it's fixed in the upcoming KDE 4.4 version.
I'll see if i need to fix something on my side.

This is a cool idea, hope you keep working on it to correct this small problems and improve its performance.

Also, if you could somehow make this work with the weather wallpaper it would be awesome.

This is really great and it looks awesome, but cpu usage is really high.
I hope you find i way to improve that.

BTW here is one great picture for this plugin that i made using your instructions:

How about checking out the "Snow" plugin? Maybe this would help you get the animation down so it doesn't eat up the CPU, seeing as the snow plugin is rendering a whole bunch of tiny images to fall at different speeds. Although I know its harder with large images.

If this was fixed up enough, I would love to see this just flat out incorporated into the normal image and slideshow modes. You could also *possibly* add a little "direction and speed" circle, rather than choosing just vertical and a 1-10 setting on a slider. It would be similar to this in Photoshop:

Also, maybe a random direction and speed box would be cool if you got it working with slideshows too! Ambitious ideas, I know, but I love it so far.

 Debian package

I don't know if it can be useful, but I have packaged in debian this
version (0.8) of plasma-wallpaper-flymode and I have inserted it into my repository. I hope it can be
useful. I don't know if you can put the link in the description.
bye! alex.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
