Description:

Romdigger can become interesting for those, who still plays games from old game consoles (like Nintendo Entertainment System) on emulator and store rom-files of favorite games on hard disk.

After setting up this library, if one opens catalog with rom-files in konqueror/dolphin, the result would look much like on the attached screens - for each rom file shown a icon with preview of the corresponding game - as if this rom file is usual png or jpg picture.

Currently it supports games from NES, SNES, Sega Genesis and Game Boy Advance platforms.

Besides preview picture, rom files would have meta-info (like actual game name, publisher, platform etc) available.

Romdigger consists of the core kde-independent library which is called romdigger, and also 2 frontends of choice - romdigger-kde3 and romdigger-kde4

More info and screenshots can be found on the project's home page.

Binaries available for OpenSUSE 10.3, for other distributions build from source code (see build instructions on home page - taking romdigger archive attached here is not enough)

Ok, those ones should be better, but don't blame me if they would load longer :)

Glad that you liked it :) I like it too :))

I am afraid, this will never happen. In addition to those 2 small libraries (romdigger base and kde3/4 integration module), which do the actual work, you will have to install rom file database with all games info (which is not really big - about 1mb for all 4 listed platforms) and also preview image packs (one package for each platform) - for NES its not so big - 26mb in archived state, but for SNES the preview image package is 97mb in packed state and 120Mb in unpacked.

I do not think any distributive would like to put all that stuff to system installation dvd (at least I wouldn't do it if I were a distribution packager :)

I am thinking of adding an option to download preview image from inet when it is requested for the1st time (then it would be stored in local cache), but this is a plan for far future.

But having this available through online repository is also a good option - currently there are 2 repositories for opensuse 10.3 (one for 10.3 default system, the 2nd is for kde4 unstable builds).

Also, just to clarify the situation - romdigger does not extract the shown info (preview image and metainfo) from the rom file itself - it just counts file's crc and searches the database of known games to get info about the rom file.

The game databases are taken from No-Intro and OfflineList projects - without them romdigger could not be much useful.

Yes, this is the problem. I have not succeded with xmame, kmame, etc.. "ROM"s I got apparently were not complete. The apps need a means or at least docs for getting ROMS.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
