Submitted:  Jun 3 2005
Updated:  Jun 22 2006

Description:

Meteosat is a superkaramba theme showing latest meteosat image in the desktop.
The fetched image is processed by imagemagick (needed as prerequisite), to obtain a "soft start border", using png opacity.
Starting with version 0.2, the images are stored in a configurable size archive, and are browsable with the mouse wheel (hint by Fabio)

Version 0.3 has been rewritten using kolombo framework

Version 0.4 has been optimized for superkaramba 0.39, using new python API in order to minimize CPU usage

Requirements:
* superkaramba >= 0.39
* imagemagik >=6.2.2
* curl

Changelog:

0.43
small fix in KolomboStateMachine.py in order to work with superkaramba embedded installer.

0.42
changed url of meteosat image in theme file
removed image post-processing in beautify.sh

0.41
fixed convert & composite usage in beautify.sh

0.4
ported to superkaramba 0.39
Use of the new superkaramba 0.39 API to maximize call interval (=low CPU)
added white background

0.3
completely rewritten using kolombo framework
http://zef.homelinux.org/vqwiki/jsp/Wiki?Kolombo
added navigation button & movie control
curl required

0.2
Added image cache browsable with the mouse wheel.

Are u sure to have superkaramba 0.39 ?
http://netdragon.sourceforge.net/sdownload.html
it seems that your karamba does not understand the "getPrettyThemeName" python call, try to replace the line with
themename = karamba.getPrettyThemeName(widget)
with
themename = "meteosat"

 meteotest fizzling?

Since April 26th 09:30 a.m. the image is always the same.

Did they give up the service? Has anyone here more information or am I doing something wrong?

There are some other weather websites with radar and/or satelite images. Maybe we could change the link or add the url. Sure it's not simply adding something to the configuration menu - there's a lot more to do. Maybe we all should think about it and discuss it.

I tried your link (only very little changes - and without the white border) but it didn't work well. And that's because they don't have the same background image at every update. So the stillimage is ok but the animation flickers and jumps.

I also tried the SAT image from weather.com but they do an update every 2 or 3 hours only. It doesn't make much sence to see, that you got wet an hour ago. I'd like to see the clouds and thunderstorm before they come.

So please (this is to all users) try to find more usable SAT image services and report them.

Thanks in advance.

í have seen too that the picture is not always the same so it flickers but for me the size fits on my desktop so i ask you if you can send me the theme (as .tar or so) with the changes for the www.zamg.ac.at pictures because its not important to me if it flickers but the size is. and as i just work with the mouse wheel on the screen it's no problem for me

my e-mail adress is rebe@a1.net

i dont stop searching the internet for some sat-images wich will fit better and i will post it here

thanks a lot

best regrads

I finally found something that could be useful:

http://www.austrocontrol.at/met_data/satellite/sat.gif

The background image is always the same (animation works fine) and they do regular updates in shorter intervals. It doesn't matter that the image is larger than the preceding ones. A smaller problem could be that the date and time in the upper left corner is in white color and sometimes there are white clouds in that area as well so the time can not be seen to good.

I changed the theme and the script and got it running for several hours now .... without any problems. In case you (maybe the author or anybody else) are/is interested you can simply mail me. Maybe you have some ideas about the date/time in white color.

Greetings from under a cloudy sky.

I have updated the theme with the url you have suggested and I have removed the image post-precessing in beautify.sh, in order to make the theme less dependent from the image format.

the pictureis not bad at all but i think when you take this for the theme you would need a lot of space on the desktop. and i just can spek for me but i have a lot of superkaramba themes on the desktop and need all space i have. so the old format was very good for me.

Simply add the line

convert ${2} -resize 68% ${2}

at the end of the file beautify.sh and restart the theme. The image should be exact the same size to the one of the former URL. Unfortunately the date is too small to read then.

A simple solution to that is, to copy the date of the original image, then reduce the image, enlarge the date and put these both together again.

Sorry, there's one thing I still have to say.

I do not and did not want to interfere in the work of the author of this project. I simply made a suggestion. You can accept it or not.

For myself I changed the beautify-script a lot more, got the "small" image, got it framed in a shiny black/gray, the bigger date/time in the left upper corner also framed, this time in red. And I have modified the .theme file so that the buttons are right under the image again. But all this is something everybody can do: a big plus of open source.

In case there are more users that want the theme the way I have it, I'd be glad to send my file to the author. (My knowledge in ImageMagick is not too good so this could get some improvement).

Once again: no hard feelings.

 change image source

hello

for europe only!
As I love this theme I change the image source because the last one is deprecated so I change the two lines in meteosat.theme.

1) to change W and H :
KARAMBA X=200 Y=80 W=641 H=490 interval=100 locked=true

2) to change image source, history, refresh and buttons position :
# KOLOMBO id=meteosat image=http://aurora.meteotest.ch/prognose/sat_images/ir_internet_europa_loop.gif histsize=256 refresh=18000 x=0 y=0 nav-layout=layouts/crystal22x22 navx=5 navy=465 post=beautify.sh

and I prefer this image because it's more "realistic"

oh I forgot to say that you can easily read time and date and the image size is the same format that on the site.

The uncommented lines in the theme I've changed to fit the large image below along with the beautify.sh, though that has been left at 68% as with the line added by cyberclaus.

KARAMBA X=200 Y=80 W=870 H=640 interval=100 locked=true

image=http://oiswww.eumetsat.org/IPPS/html/latestImages/EUMETSAT_MSG2_MPE-westernEurope.jpg histsize=256 refresh=9000 x=0 y=0 nav-layout=layouts/crystal22x22 navx=5 navy=615 post=beautify.sh

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
 It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
 Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
 Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
 Gnome 3 default shell is much better
 I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
 None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
