(your favorite screensaver).kss --root
or --display :0.0

I think kglwatersaver shows mouse trail when run from console

or a gif on a webpage as bg ?

both of these types of bg anim work, or at least used to ? (haven't tried lately)

the ripples, yes, an effect I had planned for CinAqua NaN (KDE4 Brainstorm) but...
really complicated with 3.5 , it sounds like it's covered in 4.0 which would
probably be released by the time I got anything coded up. I was leaning to GL.

can't wait to play with 4.0

 E17

it could bring some "wow" effect to KDE if done right, look at what enlightenment guys are doing, they already have animated backgrounds and they're quite cool, though a bit heavy.

I've been imagining for quite some time a backgroud that changes according to, say the weather applet, or the clock

the pictures provided are pretty lame :) but the idea is great, thanks

 Support formats

What I want to see is the power to selected things other then static background.

Support for things like avi, mkv, edj, gif, and even allow applications to render to the desktops background level easier. So we could write opengl applications, and have an easy way to have them render to the background.

Also a pause background button would be needed. Incase we want to stop it, or just freeze it for resources sake.

I fully agree with you.
The possibility to render to the desktop would be great. If done right you could make some very cool effects.

 Well isn't there...

I think there is already a patch for this function. At least I recall having able to use animated gif images with KDM...

Very cool if we could get "animated wallpaper format" or AWF as sort for animated wallpapers on kde desktop. Enlightenment e17 guys are working with so why doesn't kde4 can't have the same? :D

Besides, Windows desktop already plays GIF pictures are wallpapers and Mac has a program to make it so also.

KDE has only that root window program which can run different screensavers or programs like xearth...

KDE 4 will be able to use E17 animated wallpapers. And much more...

See some interviews with KDE developers about Plasma.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
