Okular 7zip support - Idea

   0.1

KDE Improvement

Score 50%

Submitted:  Mar 31 2009

Description:

7zip support would be useful in Okular. It doesn't seem to make sense that the proprietary RAR format is supported but the FOS 7zip is not unless the justification is that the RAR format is more widely used.
(It would be nice if it could also support the 7z format with the CB7 extension as well.)

I think you mean Ark, not Okular, don't you?

Anyways, this is not an idea that belongs to KDE-Apps.org - it's a plain feature request that would be better off on bugs.kde.org where the developer(s?) can find and track it more efficiently.

Please don't use KDE-Apps.org as a feature request system, because it's not supposed to be one.

Perhaps he means to allow for compressed pdf.gz, ps.gz ala pdf.7z and ps.7z to be read inside Okular.

Debian gz'd docs for postscript and pdf. It would be nice to have those extract temporarily, on the fly, with 7z.

i'm talking about okular not ark. ark does support 7z but okular does not. perhaps they could share code?

 Why RAR

My guess is that the RAR compression is often used. i.e. for special comic book formats.

As far as I know 7zip isn't in use for this so far?

(I don't have another explanation - but this one should fit at least.)

yes, this is one major reason. cb7 files are still rare, but i prefer them. there are plenty of other uses for 7z though as well.

Okular supports RAR? It doesn't on my openSUSE system.

But if it supports RAR it should support tar and 7z and they're used to distribute large files too.

Hello,
I see there is a big confusion here.
There is a specification for digital comic books.
The format is simple, it's just a zip or rar file renamed ad cbz or cbr with all images of the comic.
Okular can read them without trouble but there are some "new formats" that it can't read.
If you can compress some images an read them in Okular why can't we use any compressed format like 7zip.
In fact there are some books with cbz extension.

So, this may be a feature request and not an idea, but it's not a bug.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
