Konqueror plasma integration

Konqueror plasma integration

Depends on  KDE 4.x
Downloads:  189

Description:

Konqueror's user interface is static and I think it's very old. Even in KDE 4.1++ it looks quite unfriendly. In my opinion it has some redundant stuff, like Close Tab Button, even menubar! Of course not everybody thinks like me... So my idea is to use Plasma (sic!) in Konqueror, just like in Amarok. It will allow to change it in simply way. For example, user who has widescreen monitor can shrink bars, just like panels on desktop.
Plasma also allows to display dashboard, when new tab is opened. No more wastingplace! See mockup...

 plasma

Yes, integration with plasma is a good issue. By the way, if making window decoration would be as easy as making plasma theme, it would be great...

I didn't know it, but I think my idea is quite different. It's not only to display plasmoids in browser, but to create browser, which uses plasma flexibility to build user interface. Plasma can be used to display bars, tabs, and whole interface!

But isn't plasma and vector graphic to slow to use it in whole interface?

So, vector graphic can be convert to a bitmap, after creating interface. Next UI can be drawn only from bitmaps.
However, I don't think rendering SVG is slow on new computers.

 js + css?

iff your point is (assumingly) the frontpage, imho js + css would be the natural way and should be capable to acquire all this
(personally i can resist of having heavily plugin related plasma in my webbrowser)

oh:
rendering somewhat non trivial svg /is/ slow (less slow on more fast computer though...)
you see tricks with caching ploygons and pixmaps in Qt / inkscape

ok, just read a little closer:
if you want to design a browser using python etc: there're bindings for a lot of script languages and it's even possible to runtime generate ui's from qt designer files - not too fast though

you can also have sidebar plugins in konqueror

Yes, but all this solutions are hacks. Creating interface in JS+CSS is temporary and unportable method. It cannot be simply adopted in desktop and other application. Best way is to allow Konqueror to use Plasma applets in it's interface, just like in desktop...
My idea is not only to create candy start page.

1. i assume the w3c does not believe js or css are "hacks"
2. they'd work in any browser, on any system - portable enough?
(btw. google seems to believe this is the future of desktop...)
3. even win95(b?) had a "web desktop"...

4. and most important: making konqueror a plasma environment rather than a browser will defnitly require a browser substitute, at least if you intend to cross khtml with plasma
if not: you cuold easily make a plasma kpart and embed it into konqueror (i guess it would even be possible to mirror your desktop)

JS and CSS are hacks in this specific case! Creating another binding is not very good idea. I think that browser's UI should be integrated with Plasma. Only UI! Web pages' interfaces should still use JS.
Konqueror can be integrated with Plasma, as far, as it is still usefull!

which particular plasmoid do you want to include into konqueror's (given this remains mainly a webbrowser) ui?

I think it should be: System Monitor ─ Network, KGet applet, Favourities (like Speed Dial), Bookmarks, Tabs applet (which display tabs) and many more. Big applets can be placed on 'New Tab' page, but smaller and thiner can create 'every page' UI.

speeddial:
on which other containment would that be usable (and thus not be just your html startpage)

plasmoids on extra tabs:
so why not keep them on your desktop or in a kpart (if you want them only and allways with konqueror)

bookmarks allready appear in the sidebar - and i can hardly think of a more usable way to include them as plasmoid (in an extra tab?) - having an extra plasmoid for the desktop may however be considered usefull by some

"Tabs applet"
i completely do not understand this.
konqueror has tabs - if you don't like the look, write a system style or a proxy style for konqueror that just alters their appereance (on cost of ui consistency)
or do you mean a tab containing snapshots of all open tabs? (hover priviews would imho be a better option) and again: on which other containment would you place this - especially as it'd require an open konqueror... w/ tabs

kget:
has - aside the droptarget - a fully functional window that i can open faster than the konqueror sidebar, move around keep above or below and hey: why not just shrink the browser a little and see the plasmoid on my desktop?!

notwork system monitor:
the sensor is one of the few widgets/plasmoids that's really usefull, but i've sensors in a panel or the desktop all the time + network load is interesting far beyond browsing

many more doens't count. ;-P

sorry - i still don't see the usecase beyond "'cause we can" for making konqueror kinda second desktop :(

 Idea clarification

by errendir on: Sep 30 2008

Score 50%

OK, so I will try to explain my idea... It's not about using Plasma everywhere, because Plasma is not designed for every use. I think, that Konqueror's user interface is not friendly, because it cannot be simply changed like new KDE desktop.
So my idea is to use Plasma's flexibility in Konqueror, so user can change it's interface without programming and hacking. It is core of my idea. If it is hard to adopt this suggested solution (Plasma), we can try to make Konqueror flexible by another way...
But I think that it is possible. Maybe we should ask developers...

Remember, users != programmer

Anyway ─ we must make Konqueror user friendly!

What about the menus? There's a lot of functionality that's only available in menus

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
