This is a gensplash theme, a modification of gentoo-livecd 2006.1. It supports only 1280x800 resolution. "2006.1" text has been removed. Added new icons, from theme "Noia".

You will see icons for:
* acpid
* alsasound
* bootmisc
* checkfs
* clocl
* consolefont
* cpufreqd
* cupsd
* hald
* hotplug
* keymaps
* localmount
* net.eth0
* syslog-ng
* xdm
* samba

If you use genkernel:
# tar xvjf gentoo-noia.tar.bz2 -C /etc/splash
# genkernel --gensplash=gentoo-noia --gensplash-res=1280x800 initrd

# tar xvjf gentoo-noia.tar.bz2 -C /etc/splash
# splash_geninitramfs -v -g /boot/fbsplash-gentoo-noia-1280x800 -r 1280x800 gentoo-noia

=== TIPS ===
*if you prefer not to display a certain icon, simply delete /etc/splash/gentoo-noia/icons/unlit_rcname.png (eg. rm /etc/splash/gentoo-noia/icons/unlit_cupsd.png)
*you can also delay the start of xdm, editing /etc/init.d/xdm adding more services to "before" section. eg. "before cups samba cpufreqd"

version 1.1
* changed checkfs icon
* changed cupsd icon
* added samba icon

Just forgot, an example for people not using genkernel :

# tar xvjf gentoo-noia.tar.bz2 -C /etc/splash
# splash_geninitramfs -v -g /boot/fbsplash-gentoo-noia-1280x800 -r 1280x800 gentoo-noia

Example in grub.conf :
# Gentoo Linux
title Gentoo Linux
root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/kernel-2.6.17-gentoo-r8 root=/dev/hda3 splash=silent,fadein,theme:gentoo-noia quiet CONSOLE=/dev/tty1 video=vesafb:ywrap,mtr,1280x800-32@60
initrd (hd0,0)/fbsplash-gentoo-noia-1280x800

I have the same problem, when I do:
# splash_manager --theme=gentoo-noia --cmd=set --tty=1

I get:
Error: Theme 'gentoo-noia' doesn't seem to provide a config file for the current resolution (1024x768).

I have 1280x800 in my kernel:
# egrep '(1280)|(800)' /usr/src/linux/.config

When I do (in /etc/splash/gentoo-noia):
# ln -s 1280x800.cfg 1024x768.cfg

and then:
# splash_manager --theme=gentoo-noia --cmd=set --tty=1

I have the following:
No 8bpp verbose picture specified in the theme.
FBIOSPLASH_SETSTATE failed, error code 22.

I have GeForce Go 7300.

Please help. :-)

It's not in the splash config. Your system is booting with a resolution of 1024x768, so you will need to determine what fb driver you are using and the cmdline to kick it into 1280x800@32 resolution.

something like "video=radeonfb:1280x800-32"

You will need to read up on kernel configuration and the Gentoo Gensplash Howto (google for it) can talk you through the configurations you will need.

Find and follow the Gentoo Gensplash howto. You will need to probably use the radeonfb driver for your video, also vesa does not support 1280x800.

One last note, on my machine, splashes didn't work properly unless I compiled an initramfs with just the bootsplash stuff straight into the kernel.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
 It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
 Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
 Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
 Gnome 3 default shell is much better
 I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
 None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
