Consistent Removable Media Behaviour

Description:

The behaviour of Konqueror when accessing removable media seems quite inconsistent to me.

Please see the screenshot.

- Clicking on desktop icons opens the device with either media:/ or system:/ without any visible difference in function.
- To open the device path in the normal way (file:/ or just /), you have to right-click the icon and choose something like "open system folder ..." This menu entry sometimes isn't even there (!)
- The path behind media:/ or system:/ is almost never the same as the mount point, nor the device. Example from a real world medium:
Device: /dev/sda1
Mount Point: /media/disk-1
Displayed in Konqueror: media:/media/sda1 or system:/media/sda1

- Setting a default application in the properties of a the destop icon does not work. It seems like these icons have no MIME type.
- The settings for default action, Konqueror thumbnail preview etc. are _not the same_ in file:/ and in media:/ . This means a user has to set all attributes for a file type (e.g. .jpg) twice to have the same behaviour for the same image on his local HDD _and_ on a USB drive or the camera.

They shouldn´t be the same. There are still a lot of USB 1.1 devices out there, and CD´s are far slower than a hard disk at certain tasks. I do NOT want thumbnails auto-displayed on old Backup CD´s that contain 700megs of photos.

I'agree that it might be useful in some cases to have different behaviours. This would be no problem at all, if I could just define how I want removable media to be opened - as media:/ or as file:/ . But this isn't possible.

Don't you agree that it's kind of weird to have the same medium appear in various namings? (see screenshot)

Sorry, I don´t think I was clear either. I only disagree with the point I quoted. Other than that, I agree with you completely.

  Just for clarity...

By the way, I don't mind having device names and mount points! I even don't mind having a media:/ 'protocol', if the device naming is consistent and does work in a logical way.

 bug report

SUSE have the same behavior
/media/opslag
and
media:/hda6
Will be the same location but this is confusing.

I think you must make a bug report and not a feature request :)

And also I have picture previews when I navigate to media/opslag but no previews when I go to media:/hda6
I think this is a SUSE bug.

I think this has something to do whit the new mounting engine. I think that the Media protocol is a good thing but it's confusing to have 2 ways to go to the same location.

Just my two cents ;)

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
