Description:

*** Update 1 ***

If you have a computer with a small monitor and a high resolution (high dpi count) you might want to try the 'Clean Reloaded (small fonts)' variation of this theme (clean-reloaded-smallfonts-0.2.tar.gz).
It has smaller fonts and is hopefully better suited for devices like laptops and other portable computers.

*** Update 2 ***

I have updated the theme to version 0.2. The user list now has an explicit white background because there seems to be at least one KDM out there that does not default to a white background for the user list.

KDM Login Theme - Clean Reloaded

This is an unified variant of the 'Clean' KDM themes from Simon Bell.

I did like those themes, however, on my computer, I experienced a few quirks
with spacings and positions. The result is this 'Clean Reloaded' theme.
I changed the layout slightly, cleaned the xml file and used different icons.

Another change is that there is only one Clean Reloaded theme now and not three
as it is with the original Clean themes. Still, all the different backgrounds
from the original themes are included in the 'Backgrounds' subdirectory of this
theme. To change the default background, install the theme and just copy one of
the backgrounds from the 'Backgrounds' subdirectory (or any other image) over
the 'background.png' file that can be found in the theme's directory
(also see items 3.A and 3.B of the installation instructions).

original readme file and the variations of the three SVG backgrounds
(http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/Clean?content=74405).

*** Installation instructions ***

(Optional) Install the 'DejaVu' font set. It is not included because of
possibly unclear licensing terms.

1. Download the theme.

2.A: Automatic installation: Download and install the KDM Theme Manager (from
http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=22120) and then point
the Theme Manager to the downloaded .tar.gz theme file.

2.B: Manual installation: Extract the archive and copy the folder to
'/usr/kde/YOUR.VERSION/share/apps/kdm/themes'.

Then edit your'/usr/kde/YOUR.VERSION/share/config/kdm/kdmrc' file so that
it contains the line 'UseTheme=true' and state the theme you would like
to use with the line
'Theme=/usr/kde/YOUR.VERSION/share/apps/kdm/themes/clean-reloaded'.

That's it! You can, if you like...

3.A: Change the theme's background image (pixel variant): Copy the new
background image (of appropriate size to fit your login screen) to
'/usr/kde/YOUR.VERSION/share/apps/kdm/themes/clean-reloaded/background.png'.

There are three different background images of varying sizes already
included within this theme (from the original 'Clean' themes).
They can be found in the
'/usr/kde/YOUR.VERSION/share/apps/kdm/themes/clean-reloaded/Backgrounds'
directory.

3.B: Change the theme's background image (SVG variant): Copy the new
background image in SVG format to
'/usr/kde/YOUR.VERSION/share/apps/kdm/themes/clean-reloaded/background.png'
(and ignore the now wrong filename extension).

Modify the 'clean-reloaded.xml' file in the theme's directory: Exchange
the word "pixmap" with the word "svg" in the sixth line of the file.

4. Set the login background to be the same as the KDM theme background so it
doesn't change so often while logging on:
Go to the KDE Control Center > System Administration > Login Manager, click
'Administrator Mode' and set the background image to be the 'background.png'
file (step 3.A or 3.B) from the theme's directory.

5.A: Change the default user login icon (via KDE's control center):
Go to the KDE Control Center > System Administration > Login Manager, click
'Administrator Mode', go to the 'Users' tab and there choose a new default
picture by clicking on the picture button in the 'picture files' region.

There are two user icons included within this theme. There can be found as
'default1.png' and 'default2.png' in the theme's directory
(e.g. '/usr/kde/3.5/share/apps/kdm/themes/clean-reloaded/').

5.B: Change the default user login icon (manually): Rename the picture you want
to use as the default login icon to 'default1.png' and copy it over the
(old default) one in your '/usr/kde/YOUR.VERSION/share/apps/kdm/pics/users'
folder.

Changelog:

Version 0.1 - initial release
Version 0.2 - explicit white background for the user list

I like your theme alot, I have 1 problem though...

The box for the user list is transparent rather than having the white background as shown in your screenshots, I looked at the xml file and things appear to be as I would expect (knowing nothing about creating themes) the one thing I thought might help me is changing the alpha setting (line 42 0f the clean-reloaded.xml file) to something other than 0.0

My question then...

How to get the white background or alternatively, how to change the color of the fonts for users that are not selected from black (#000000) to another color (like white, #ffffff)

thanks again, nice theme

It may be that your KDM is patched (check your distribution developers on this). Mostly, there is little you can do except edit the graphic and create the white box.

Hi and thanks for trying out my theme.

Your problem sounds really strange and unfortunately I could not reproduce it on my machines.
It may be because of a patched KDM as oMasta0 pointed out in the previous comment.

The alpha settings you mention are for hiding three outer boxes which I put in there to help me with positioning all the elements. If they had an alpha value other than 0.0 they would overlap the menu background which in turn would not look nice :) (besides the alpha value for the user list's outer box is on line 27 and not 42).

I did an update for the theme though. And it now has an explicit white background for the user list. I hope this solves your problem.

To answer the second part of your question: You can change the color of all the labels and custom texts by changing the appropriate tag:
<normal color="#ffffff" font="DejaVu Serif 12" />
Just change the color-attribute to anything you like - HTML color naming applies.
I have, however, not (yet) found a way for changing the color of the text fields and the user list.

Thank you both for your comments, yes my kdm theme-manager seems to be acting a little flakey, could be an openSuSE problem (could be a bad interaction somewhere too, I've got alot of stuff installed).

Paran0id..
Yeah I noticed I had mentioned the wrong line # when I started experimenting with things, did get some better knowledge of what was happening but couldn't fix the problem.

Just tried version 0.2 and it seems to fix the problem I reported, Thanks alot.

I had 1 other question, I've noticed in many screenshots the names in the userlist box (the left box) begin at the top of the box and work down (fill downwards) depending on the # of users. On my machine the users names seem to be centered in the box, filling as much of the listbox as needed (working up and down from center). Not a problem but thought that might be related to the problem I had (perhaps thats the suse patch that was causing my problem.) Anyway it's not an issue, the theme works just as I would hope now.

Thanks,

See ya

I am glad the update worked for you and I think that the strange behaviour of your KDM is indeed probably due to some SuSE specific patches to KDM.
You could have a look at some of the originally installed KDM themes - if there are any - and compare their xml file to the xml file of this theme or other themes that you can find on kde-look.org.

Thanks for the credit. Glad you liked the the theme and it's good to see it being worked on.

I can't actually try it though as I have moved over to KDE4 and the new KDM won't use old themes as far as I can tell. I would like to port it across but if you are enjoying themeing KDM at the moment maybe you could - I don't think there are many/any new KDM themes about.

Simon :)

Thanks for stopping by :)
Unfortunately I have your "problem" the other way round: I have not yet upgraded to KDE 4. I am using Gentoo Linux and I am probably going to wait until KDE 4 hits the stable tree on Gentoo because my computer is somewhat of a "production" machine and I do not want to jeopardize my working KDE config :)

This is my first try on theming KDM and I only took it up because I really did like your theme and when it did not work for me I immersed myself into the theme's xml file.
When i eventually upgrade to KDE 4 I am probably also going to upgrade this theme, but it will not be in the next few weeks.

By the way - do you know of any (good) KDM theming howtos or references (for KDE 3 or 4)? When I worked on this theme I noticed a general lack of specific search results on Google.

If you just want to exchange the background you can do it quite easily with the existing theme:

Download the theme and extract the contents of the tar.gz file to a folder of your choice. This folder will then contain a subfolder called "clean-reloaded".

Copy a wallpaper of your liking (and if possible with the correct resolution of your login screen) to this "clean-reloaded" folder.

Delete the file "background.png" from the "clean-reloaded" folder and rename the new background wallpaper to "background.png".

The new background wallpaper does not have to be a real png file - KDM can also load jpg's and other common image formats. Just do not change the name "background.png" because the xml file from the theme refers to its background wallpaper by this name.

Pack the "clean-reloaded" folder with tar (and gzip) and use the KDM Theme Manager to install your new theme or follow the instructions from the README file for manual installation.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
