Description:

SIMPLIFY Kmail interface:

1. I hate when one application opens (too) many windows - it causes chaos on my desktop.

2. Viewing folders list, messages list and message preview in Kmail at the same time is inconvenient - we need to divide space between them.

Solution: breadcrumbs :-)

(It\\\'s more general idea but Kmail irritates me so much with its interface!)

Comments welcome :-)

Changelog:

v0.01: didn\\\'t have time to play with buttons on toolbars so they\\\'re not quite related to mockup content :P

This is a great start; different from any other email client I have seen. I think you also could do even more with this to make it an even more comfortable one-window display.

hey, i also like your idea. you should post it to the kde-usability mailing list.
i liked the first two screen shots but the third is IMO not so good, because then you have an overloaded toolbar, which can be really confusing. instead i would just put an extra TextEdit underneath the E-Mail (like gmail or so). That would be more comfortable.

And when it comes to fading out the folder list, i think the favorite folders should at least be displayed (because of quick access also like in dolphin).

I personally do not use very much the breadcrumbs in dolphin, but i think your idea is really worth to think about.

About toolbars: did you read my comments on screenshots? The toolbars shown on mockup just indicate that there will/might be some useful buttons ;-)

Adout favourite folder list - I thought it might be shown (as in dolphin) when you click and hold "folders" button. That would save space.
But on the other hand I think that less advanced users (again: like my mom ;-P ) will not know that they can do that ;)

Well, in the end it might be good idea to have choice whether I want to have side panel with folders or not. As you noticed it is quite usable.

i think i'd be happier when all of this was solved by opening other windows (new/reply message etc.) in tabs..

I confirm to takanowaka.
With only one open control at a time, how could it be realized if I need to read an other mail to complete the answering mail to another recipient. For that use case it is much better to have tabs. But the breadcrump style can also be applied while having tab style.

I thinked about this while doing this mockup and had these thoughts:
- when I reply to some mail, I see content of it in reply area
- when I'm writing new email (or replying) and I have to see information from some other email I can allways right-click "open in new window/tab" (or such button on msg list or in toolbar)

I did also think about navigating trough threads - it would need some additional buttons/widgets not shown in mockup but this is when you people come up with your ideas :-)
Why not to change this rather ancient user interface? ;-)

Hey, this looks like I really want to use this interface.

KMail devs, have you seen this?

I sent two ideas to brainstorm kde:

http://forum.kde.org/brainstorm.php#idea66356

I think they will help to make the interface less rigid.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
