Backstage (mini-gui)

KDE4 Brainstorm

Description:

The idea is to move the funtionality of the small, limited system tray icon of some applications to a bigger widget like mini GUI. These Bqckstage widgets can live on the desktop or a \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"third layer\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" (think apples dashboard). If the desktop or third layer are easy to access, i.e. with a key or button, this is more usable then the small system tray icon.
I used Amarok as an example in the mockup.
The actions that can be preformed, now in the right click menu of the system tray icon are represented as icons. The info that pops up when hovering over it is always shown on the Backstage widget.

Read this blog post for more info: http://commonideas.blogspot.com/2006/03/kde4-backstage.html

This is similar but not the same as what I think plasma and it\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s plasmoids are supposed to be. But it could be a part of it.
I would implement it with animated SVG and maybe some scripting, communicating with the main application over DBUS. The associated C++ API should reduce as much of the implementation work as possible for the developer.

I\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'m thinking of implementing this if it\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s popular enough, please comment.

You might want to join #plasma on Freenode IRC and talk with people there... To get your ideas straight and such :) It sounds like good stuff, but the best thing is to get it worked out with the Plasma people, in that work-together KDE sorta spirit :)

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
