There is no good tutorial on widget styles. Your best starting point is the QStyle and KStyle documentation. Then look at the various styles, and I would recommend any of my own (phase, qinx, newstep). There is also an extremely brief introduction in one of the Qt Quarterly docs (see trolltech site).

Unfortunately you're not going to get a whole lot of comments because coding a style is very much low level detail work without much need to explain to a maintainer what you're doing. For example, no one wants to comment, "draw line from upper left corner to upper right corner", "draw line from upper right corner to lower right corner", "draw line from lower right corner...", etc, for several hundred widgets, especially when the drawLine() functions should be explanation enough.

Which "must have" functions you implement depend upon how much you're willing to accept some of Qt's and KDE's implicit defaults (pixel metrics, contents sizes, etc). At the minimum these would be drawPrimitive(), drawControl(), and drawComplexControl().

There is no equivalent to "kwin -replace" for styles. However, changes to a style take place upon restarting the application. They (should) also take place upon selecting "apply" in the KControl style page. Creating a dummy test app in Qt Designer that contains the widgets you're interested in should get you a long way.

Good luck

 Konqueror's Services

by Maxilys on: Oct 8 2004

I don't know if creating services for Konqueror turns you into a developper... Any way, it looked to me like the better place to ask.

I'm trying to create a service for Konqueror that works on the current
selection of files and folders.

What value must I write as ServiceTypes in .desktop file? I would like to
prevent the service from being available when you right-click in Konqueror's
window, i.e. whitout a real selection.

That's what happens if I add inode/directory into the ServiceTypes.

AFAIK, there's no other way to accept folders.

I tried to add a test at the beginning of the script called by the service
but I didn't find the way to differentiate an empty selection from a
selection containing only a folder.

Is there a hidden ServiceTypes that looks like "all/non_empty_selection" and
that I'm not aware of? ;-)

You might want to add some more information about just what the program does. It often helps when you are trying to generate interest in your projects ;)

I left it out on purpose though. I actually wanted to write one myself but I figured if anyone saw it and queried me I'd email them about it. Its a user-level daemon that listens for keycodes from any type of keyboard and processes events accordingly. Its being built with no particular desktop or configuration in mind.

 submiting artwork

How do I submit artwork content to the KDE team ?
One suggested me to do so with a set of kdm users pictures (http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=17355).

I looked on kde homepage and artist.kde.org but didn't find a way. I think it isn't worth creating an entry on bugs.kde.org .....

could one advice me ?

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
