 Icons and LGPL

by Arcturan on: Jul 21 2005

Continuing the discussion from "Art and GPL", I have a more specific question:

I'm developing a commercial website. I want to use an LGPL icon set from kde-look. What exactly do I have to do? How should I give credit to the creator and how should I mention the licence?

What if it were GPL?

The HTML and PHP on the website can not possibly fall under the LGPL, but how about the GPL case?

 Small Res vs SVG

by goldenboy on: Aug 12 2005

Hi,
i got a little problem with making some small resolution icons (32x32, 48x48, 64x64) out of svgs.

Since we all know the biggest problem with SVG's is, that something looking good as a vector graphic becomes unhandsome, when exporting it as a low res bitmap. That's mostly because the borders of the icons are getting lost. But what is the best way of getting these borders back?

I tried editing the icons to select the border and decreasing its brightness, but know the border looks somehow crispy :(

Any suggestions or tips?

cheers

You may want to export a full size PNG from your SVG image and then use The GIMP to make smaller sizes by scaling down the PNG. With Gimp you can use different tricks to have the small icon looking good. You can use the bi-linear scaling method, use dithering effects, adding shadow as well as doing some pixel retouching here and there.

I agree with Dave, SVG is so far useless at 22, 16 pixel sizes. You are pretty much forced to tweak the PNG's themselves.

Which is not as bad as it sounds, since SVG renderer in KDE is still slow/inadequate.

You also often have to disable some layers/details of the SVG as you progress to smaller sizes.

Check "The Result" section of
http://suslikart.blogger.com for an example.

 A logo for Metal4kde

by kudos on: Aug 28 2005

Score 50%

We're searching for a logo for the next release of Metal4kde. Everyone who's interested is invited to participate.

The logo should be composed by a web banner:

324x64 pixels (large)
128x32 pixels (small)

And and icon:

Starting from 128x128 pixels to 16x16 pixels. Upload your artwork to the artwork contest section of KDE-Look.org.

Thanks,
kudos

Anyone with window decoration concepts and prototypes, if you've got PNGs, send them along to me and I'll generate a kwin dec for you!

As many PNGs as possible otherwise I'll have to get creative. ;)

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
